ericwang, 10 Apr 2021There are lots of way to slove patten problem, although some... moreCorrect. What you described, is a simply bully tactic by using China's population as leverage. However, you're pretty wrong on others: Qualcomm has many customers, the 3 vendor you listed aren't even their largest client. They made it even before the Chinese vendor start making mobile phones, they'll continue to do so - just at lower revenue. Exynos isn't doing that great as you claim. In fact, they're even behind Mediatek in market shares. Samsung, probably paying more for Qualcomm than its own Exynos for two reason:

          1. Most Exynos makes to the mid to lower end of the mobile phones. Hence, majority are the cheaper Exynos.
          2. For the high-end Exynos, that selected market. And the biggest selected market is mostly EMEA. While Snapdragon still goes to their high-end lines in US and Asia (including Korea for current gen), which still beat the EMEA market in sales.

And being the giant of Qualcomm, they do have large patent pool. They don't even necessary need to sell actual chip to make money. Just like the 3 vendor you mention, are mostly likely still paying US$ 2 per device patent to Microsoft, as many Android phone vendors do.

Zoser, 09 Apr 2021You are wrong, Huawei is not completely original. Their Ki... moreWay too high hopes on the RISC-V, as so do many Chinese see as option out. But two things:

                  1. RISC-V isn't mature enough on desktop, never mind mobile.
                  2. Software eco - Limited Linux distro support, mostly see adoption on BSD due the RISC-V's own market presence. As long as you don't make it easy for end-user on OS-level, you'll not see shift in developer focus.

RISC, has it pros and cons. It will not be able to outpace x86-64 easily. For all it intend and purpose, RISC has being on the market before along Intel, AMD and Cyrix. It didn't workout, just like many tech giant fall under history, and I don't see it miraculously being a solution for the x86-64 patent issue just because RISC-V is open-source design.

For example, the biggest customer of Meditek and Qualcomm are three Chinese comapnies,Xiaomi,OPPO (including Oneplus and Realme) and Vivo.(Samsung have own in house chip). If they make an agreement that Qualcomm should let them use some Qualcomm's patten(maybe they will pay some money) or all of them wont buy yhe Qualcomm's chip anymore, what will Qualcomm do?

In China,it called the 'use market trade the technology',which already use in highspeed train and car industry

Anonymous, 10 Apr 2021If you buy something stolen, you are commiting crime as well. Then you should know lots of Taiwanese who formly work in TSMC join Samsung Semi to help them catch up the TSMC since 14LPE.

blue.sun, 09 Apr 2021This, however, does not work. Huawei was completely origina... moreYou are wrong and i explained it on other post but is pending of be approved by a moderator. Anyways Kirin SoC for example is not original completely. Use ARM architecture that they must license to ARM Ltd. So only due to that you are wrong.

U.S.A. can't forbit ARM to license to Huawei but Huawei depends of the U.S.A. technology to manufacture their phone is several ways. The bans came from there. For example TSMC use U.S.A technology and machinery to manufacture Kirin processors... And the USA prohibited TSMC from manufacturing components for Huawei. And a large, etc.

At the beginning even Intel and AMD where prohibited to do business with Huawei. So no Intel processors repair their server or build new ones. No access to buy RAM memories, etc. So they stocked as mach components as possible with the hope that things change later. But for now U.S.A only allow sell them old technology based on U.S.A patents.
