Weekly poll: Sony Xperia Mark III tries something different, but is it worth the price of admission?

18 April 2021
Looking at these three you get the feeling that Sony is ignoring market trends and is content to do its own thing - would you be part of it?

Global market share will still be zero

I just hate the 21:9 screen, wish it were 18:9. the length the screen is ok, wish the screen were 75mm wide. 12MP is quite tiny these days, main cam should be 24MP minimum and 3:2 sensor (e.g. 6000x4000p).

People here in the comment sections, don't understand that not all phone manufacturers make devices for all countries. Sony for the last couple of years, has stopped focusing on countries with low income.

I dont want to spend more than 500,- € for my next phone. If the Xperia 10 mkIII is 400,- max., it's exactly my cup of tea. Ok-CPU,
Ok-camera, memory-expandable, headphone-jack, good display and battery. And not too big. All I want from a mobile.

Nick Tegrataker, 18 Apr 2021I'll seriously consider getting Xperia 5 if the camera... moreOnly 10iii has auto HDR.
              5 and 1 do not.

You still need to turn in on. Gonna take only 5s to open photo pro, go to settings, turn on HDR. I do not understant what keeps people from doing this.

Sony needs better way to make screen less reflective. How many phones out there do not have even 600 nits and people do not have issues outdoor?
All samsung phones before S8 have less than 600.
Creator Mode pushed it to 670. This is more than all other previous 4K devices. Just few like Z3, Z4, XZ2 and XZ2c can pass this value.

Keep dreaming on 200 more nits.
Sure be glad they keep lower to spare the phone from burn-in as soon as it is possible.

Higher brightness is why burn-in happens more on expensive phones than cheap phones.
Much easier to see burn-in on Galaxy S than Galaxy A, despite lower volume of devices sold.

Obviously Apple and Samsung love burned screens, because they can charge at least $250 to replace a screen that does not even cost $75.

GSMArena should start taking actions again these trolls, seriously they should add back the verification for anonymous users

Among the bugs on Android 11:
Losing all GPS randomly and failing to reaquire.
Terrible 5G reception compared to other phones.
Losing the app switcher in gesture mode.
Blocking all incoming and outgoing calls on Bluetooth in the car.
                      Fingerprint sensor simply stops working.
Auto focus is unreliable, you never know what's going to come out.
                      And more...
I don't trust that phone at all.

I am glad that Sony still does things in a different way. And all those anonymous kids, so "laughing" at high price or so called "lack of improvement" or "lack of image" - go ahead, just buy your crappy chinese phones. We, who use Sony, can laugh in your face, because you are just... dumb.

Nick Tegrataker, 18 Apr 2021"Clean-Android UI" isn't a part of hardware,... moreThis was not a bug. Sony purposely required the restart. I remember their reasons are to ensure safety and reduce the risk of facing bugs instead.

p.s. seems Sony removed this feature in their 11 update, my friend mentioned the change of his 10 II to me.

Woohoo, 18 Apr 2021Wait, so variable telephoto, 20fps burst w/ AF/AE, human/pe... more"Clean-Android UI" isn't a part of hardware, and (somewhat surprisingly) the software has been the Achilles' heel for the entire Xperia high end lineup last year. A lot of people were complaining about how buggy they have become after the Android 11 update.

Speaking of bugs, did they even fix the issue where the phone is automatically restarted whenever you pull out the sim tray? I believe it was present on Xperia XZ-era, but is it still present on Xperia 1/5 II?

Samath N8 808 owner, 18 Apr 2021Sony's recent attempts suit those who're more int... moreThanks for also enjoying LG phones' audio quality (which many people ignored)! I also enjoy listening to music on my G8 and V50S (in fact my G6 also has Quad DAC, check the H870DS model, just I broke it by accident).

Yes I also hope Sony can have a better integration on that, as outside the mobile phone business, Sony is traditionally much better-known for their Hi-Fis and sound quality. Now with one fewer competitor (sad news for me as an LG fan), this should be easier for them.

I'll seriously consider getting Xperia 5 if the camera performance is consistent enough in auto, the display is at least 200 nits brighter than 5 II, Sony has fixed its buggy software (Xperia 1/5 II's Android 11 update messed up the experience of a lot of users apparently), and they start selling it officially in where I live. Sheer specs wise it's actually very solid and has all the features I need on my future phone, but the predecessor had several kinks as well as an availability issue that had demotivated me from buying one, so I'm hope Sony has worked on those.

Xperia 1 III on the other hand.. nah. 4500mAh battery powering a presumably very power hungry 4K120Hz non-LTPO/VRR display already reeks of a battery life problem, and everything else is kept pretty much the same as its smaller sibling. I won't pay extra $200 just for the higher resolution display, no thanks.

I won't even consider buying Xperia 10 III, but not because it's a bad phone - I'm simply not interested in a midranger. So this can be said for all non high end phones from every other brand as well.

AnonD-994853, 18 Apr 2021I have never been liking sony smartphones for years. Sony x... moreNo offence but have you ever used an Xperia from the 1 or 5 lineup or seen them in-person? To say the display quality is poor, have you seen how much worse the colours are on the S20 Ultra or iPhone 11 series- put an Xperia 1 II next to them and the creator mode works wonders. It's only improved in the Xperia 1 III, as they have tuned creators mode further and now each individual smartphone display will be manually calibrated before being shipped for further colour accuracy & none of that screen tinting seen in galaxy and iPhone devices.

Sony's recent attempts suit those who're more into content creation, DSLR, etc and while their previous such efforts didn't quite go the distance, like the phone-attachable 1 inch sensor cameras, I'd still encourage them to go their own way.

All they need to do is set their formula right: LG's gone, so there's a space for killer music phones, along with proper online music services that are versatile, something for everyone sort of.
They can do something awesome with cameras as well. They can start by having multiple camera apps, one each for good fun times (cartoon filters and all), one for critical photography, and one solely for videos and so...

I encourage them to go this direction, although for now, I'd enjoy music on my LG G8x. For now, I'll just watch.
