Weekly poll results: Sony's Xperia Mark III lineup excites, a price cut may take it a long way

25 April 2021
With unique features and a design that doesn't follow the mainstream, these three could be a success - but the price is a bit high.

(This might be b4 the Android 11 update tho which could help/hinder the overall output)
And b4 u start commenting-look how garbage the stock processing is, it's not meant for that, it encourages u to use the photo/video pro app instead.
It isn't meant to please the general public, it's more of an enthusiast device since they actually somewhat listen to their "communities of interest" & have features u probably won't find combined on a single device.

Nick Tegrataker, 30 Apr 2021It seems a bit contradictory to me that you talk about the ... more"It seems a bit contradictory to me that you talk about the potential downside of QB sensors (increase in crosstalk)"

Not really. The QB sensors are more likely to suffer from crosstalk than the N808 sensor. The pixel size is what would effect it. The 0.6um pixel size and the number of pixels packed into the sensor would increase the risk of crosstalk. The N808 has 1.4um pixels which would help reduce it.

The reason why the pixel size matters is because when light hits the sensor, an adjacent green might count as a red by mistake since they are so close together. Having bigger and wider pixels reduces that problem. That's why I was suggesting a improved N808 sensor which could be bumped up to 1 inch and make it even better.

"And while redesigned Lumia 1020/Nokia 808 sensors may sound nice, they wouldn't be able to avoid the consequence of shrinking pixels sizes for the sake of packing as many pixels as possible"

I mean if they continue with their 48MP 1.4um pixel size sensors, then it should still be fine. With a 1 inch sensor, they would even make it a bit bigger. An alternative would be having some weird pixel count like the A7R with a 36.4 MP sensor with bigger pixels. They've already had plenty of pixels with a decent size on a phone. Having 108 or higher is a waste and overkill, it would help with the sharpness, but it would be insignificant.

A redesigned N808 sensor, with improved optics, OIS, a faster processor, and a wider aperture would be much better than a 200MP small pixel QB camera.

SuuperBaka, 28 Apr 2021You are right, it is up to me to show them, but I don'... moreIt seems a bit contradictory to me that you talk about the potential downside of QB sensors (increase in crosstalk) while treating the high-res Bayer sensors from old Nokia phones as the greatest things smartphone manufacturers ever used for their cameras or something. If my understanding is right, the effect of crosstalk on image quality should be less significant in QB since no pixel is surrounded by differently coloured pixels from ALL directions (=less colour fringing/bleeding).

And while redesigned Lumia 1020/Nokia 808 sensors may sound nice, they wouldn't be able to avoid the consequence of shrinking pixels sizes for the sake of packing as many pixels as possible - poor light sensitivity and narrow dynamic range. If you look at Pixel 4 or 5's camera samples, you can clearly tell that the amount of noise skyrockets as the the scene gets darker, and at it starts to show unpleasant amount of noise already at like ISO200 which is a poor showing from what used to be called a smartphone camera king. QB has been exactly designed to circumvent this issue, and it's been proven to work well.

Samsung has done nothing like this, which is why it's called the world's first.

You are misunderstanding when I say 20 fps shooting. It's 20 fps shooting for photos, when you have fast moving objects and want to get the perfect shot, you can use this and find the best ones. What other phone has something like this?

SuuperBaka, 28 Apr 2021Which phone does 20 fps shooting like the Xperia 1 iii? ... moreBy variable telephoto lens I think you mean variable apeture, not variable zoom(which is 1x to whatever with EVERYTHING in between). And I dunno about you, but samsung has tried variable apeture with their s9 yet the reviewers called it useless.

And won't you want more frames in a video, or am I misunderstanding something? Because 20fps is on the low end of the spectrum.

Interesting fact about new mark III series is that in that phone work guys from G-Master lenses department like Hiroyuki Chiba. If Sony brings G-Master technology to the Xperia (like Nano AR2 coating or linear motors) that will be nice.

Nick Tegrataker, 28 Apr 2021I couldn't find them. So all I did was to download sev... moreYou are right, it is up to me to show them, but I don't have access to a QB camera and can't find any RAWs online. From what I read, the QB DNGs are disguised as a Regular Bayer DNG. I have no idea what RAWs you saw from a QB so I can't make a comment.

Again the small pixels increase the risk of crosstalk. When light enters on a red pixel, it could potentially be counted by an adjacent blue pixel. Samsung's 9 in 1 binning sensor reduces colour information further than the dual pixel from Sony or Pixel sensor. The only decent sensor would be the N808 or Lumia 1020 with the non-bayer 41MP sensor. The pixels are larger and since there is no binning of pixels, the colour information isn't reduced.

Sony bought Toshiba's sensor business which is the same one used by the N808. if Sony released a smartphone line with a single sensor like that or a non-Bayer 1-inch sensor and high MP, that would be an insane camera. The N808 was limited by its time, but we now have processors that can handle it properly.

LucasN82, 27 Apr 2021Yes quad bayer has better resolution but that 48mpx is like... moreLenses on many phones are already capable of resolving ~40MP of resolution on the centre portion, so detail wise there shouldn't be much to concern about - 2x digital zoom will have a plenty of lines and patterns resolved, comparable to an output from a dedicated 2x telephoto camera if you get the algorithms right. Looking at 2x samples from Mi 11 Ultra and Mate 40 Pro, the noise level doesn't appear to be that problematic either (an individual pixel size is getting pretty large these days), and neither does the dynamic range.
