27 April 2021
It seems not all Zenfone 8 models will continue the flip camera tradition of years past.

andrehe, 28 Apr 2021There is a perfectly reasonable technology available and pr... morewas also considering zenfones due to uninterrupted display aside from gaming phones of any brands and most xperias...
hopefully they can provide one, aside from this one, for people who prefer such display who cannot buy an xperia for whatever reason...
besides, asus should at least provide at least one handset continuing the zenfone flip camera... the variable angle is good too not only for selfie reasons, you can get creative with that...

There is a perfectly reasonable technology available and proven: bezels on both sides which contain a selfie camera AND a front-facing loudspeaker, so you get stereo loudspeakers where they belong to be. You do not need 21:9 on a mobile, 16:9 is enough and still a very common video format, so you have space for bezels. Of course I expect 3.5mm jack and SD expansion support as well. That is why I have changed from Samsung to Sony, and after looking for a while on Asus offerings, I am less motivated with this brand now. Sony does not blindly follow stupid trends and reduction of functionality, but reasons about it and does not step back. They could offer more models, and they could need some competition on features, but at the moment they are the only brand not removing features.

If they price this a bit lower than rog 5, then this definitely a winner ... the symmetrical top and bottom bezel look beautiful

salarx, 27 Apr 2021The flipcam module uses liquid metal. Asus explained it wel... moreWell as I said, removing sensor(s) from the flip module would eliminate the need for the liquid metal, and there are other materials or methods allowing equivalent or better results, 3D printing in general, or 3D printing of Titanium for example, but also composite materials.

"If a generic phone exists, doesn't mean you have to buy it."
My complaints are NEVER that just a generic phone exist, my complaints are that beside those generic phone there isn't anything else to choose from.

This is a quickly put together idea, I can do much better, or find many other solutions, including or not the flip up, I already see EASILY how to significantly reduce the space taken by the motor by switching to a really thin and long linear actuator.
Sadly, it is common place in most industry to not innovate and to keep the same design with minor changes over and over again, which is why we don't see something like my electromagnetic pop up concept :
        https://imgur.com/gallery/ykYfaa6
And it is even more true in the Smartphone industry, so I sadly doubt that any significant change will be made to the flip up.
Like the slider phones, they had issues because half of the phone had to move, why they didn't simply make a sliding piece on the back that simply had the front sensors hosted on top in a dent on the top back of the phone is beyond me, it would have solved every issue, but they kept doing it until it died...

We can push particles at 99.9% of the speed of light, we can propel kinetic impactor at hypersonic speed in railguns, we can make a rotor that goes at 60 BILLIONS RPM, we have magnetic actuators that goes over 350mm/s, the F22 Raptor and F35 Lightning missile bay is basically a much more complex pop up, and it has to work at supersonic speed, and we can't evolve how the pop up work in years?
The design hasn't changed AT ALL, despite different brands getting into it, if they really wanted they could have a long ago, the OnePlus 7t and Mi 9t Pro could have, the Poco F2 Pro even more.
But innovation is dead, people keep copying things again and again, I have no doubts that they could easily find much better ideas than mines (keep ion mind that I say that as an Inventor with a LOT of imagination), but all they do is barely improving existing things, and sometime making a small change that is so big compared to what was done prior that it is seen as a game changer despite being a small improvement and sometime a tiny change.
        That's sad...

AnonD-909757, 27 Apr 2021Dude, if you REMOVE two cameras from the Flip Up Module, it... moreThe flipcam module uses liquid metal. Asus explained it well enough, that not many companies deal with this kind of metal, and the limited supply anyway increases the cost compared to something mass produced. I mean look at the availability of Zenfone 6 and 7, they disappeared before they arrived. It's a nice idea, but a niche one. It makes the phone expensive, limited in quantity, and then there might not be that many takers for it. Still Zenfone 8 Flip is rumoured, so it might launch alongside Zenfone 8 Compact / Zenfone Pro. If a generic phone exists, doesn't mean you have to buy it. Let's see what Zenfone Flip brings new to the table. It might have the same implementation as you mentioned, or Asus might taken inspiration if they read your comment. I like what you suggested about camera implementation.

salarx, 27 Apr 2021The left and right insides of the phone aren't empty, ... moreDude, if you REMOVE two cameras from the Flip Up Module, it means you GAIN this space back around it...
"cost" was always one of those BBS argument against the pop up and flip up that actually, as 99% of the lies about it, is totally false, I don't know why people suddenly think mechanical things are super fragile and expensive, but the fact is, most phones are probably much cheaper having a fulldisplay and a pop up/flip up than a punch hole.

What is it with everyone not understanding what I say?
I speak/write correctly! "Removing a camera from the flip up and putting them in the body", where did I say simply adding new cameras?
I talk about moving existing ones.

And the space thing is also another BS argument against those moving camera that the Poco F2 Pro actually proved wrong by having a Pop up + 4 sensors + a 3.5mm Jack + + a HUGE cooling chamber, and still managed to get identical or bigger battery capacity than multiple other phones of the same size and thickness released the same year, AND it was one of the cheapest phone with the SD865.
PLUS, Smartphones are currently TOO THIN anyway, there are already many super slim 7mm to choose, but barely any 9mm, and while thin phones are mainly for aesthetic, thicker is ergonomic, as many do prefer thicker phones or have issues handling thin phones.

Anonymous, 27 Apr 2021Split then is an alternative but Zenfone 7 was already big ... moreI was talking about REMOVING a camera and having the Flip Up with ONLY a SINGLE Wide or Wide/Ultra-Wide combo, or perhaps put a second sensor as a ToF, it means one less sensor than it currently have.

AnonD-909757, 27 Apr 2021Again, if they didn't put ALL the camera in the flip m... moreThe left and right insides of the phone aren't empty, you know? There's always a tradeoff. Cost, battery size, being competitive. Zenfone 7 already crossed €700 Euros. People might be willing to pay that much amount for an iPhone or Galaxy, but not for a Zenfone. Even Mi flagships come under $500. It's really hard to compete with price the features ratio, and if you're pouring all your money in one feature, it's gonna be as good as an advertisement, but no many will be buying it. As much as I love the flipcam, I'm happy they are releasing 'generic' phones too, otherwise they'll meet the fate of LG.

Something more will have to be sacrified. The last time was the audio jack. Probably it'll be the battery capacity as the 7 was already big 165.1 x 77.3 x 9.6 mm and 230g.

I doubt that the next flip model comes with splitted cameras as it will be the main model leaked. Anyways let's see what they release and sure we will debate it. The diversity in designs is one of the best thing we have in the Android world.

Finally a good design choice by Asus. Feel like they've been left behid since the Zenfone 4, i remember then when that was the first phone with 4gb of ram, and that thing was quite a big deal then.

AnonD-920712, 27 Apr 2021Finally all phone stuck in punch hole. (and no UDC) But ... moreLolol. Those who still complaining about notch, need to realized this.
                          I cannot agree more.

So finally funny enough, the single punch hole camera is now trendsetter for phones.
Especially it cut is in the center, it actually gives some aesthetic.
Better than any motorized, flip and any other gimmick front camera placement.
                            Cannot agree more.

salarx, 27 Apr 2021Though I'm disappointed too, but there wasn't any... moreAgain, if they didn't put ALL the camera in the flip module, it wouldn't be an issue, a single NORMAL sensor in the flip up and the Ultra-Wide and Telephoto on the body, or a two settings Wide + Ultra-Wide on the flip up and the Telephoto in the body would work well.

Even better, not putting ANY sensor in the flip up module, rather a mirror/prism couple, one at 90° to gather the image, a second one that have half the angle of the flip up to allow it to reflect into the main sensor, it would make every camera being sideway as a Periscope is, and the sensors not only could stay totally normal without any special metals, but the flip up mechanism would be much lighter, which is a good thing.

Though I'm disappointed too, but there wasn't any other choice. Zenfone 6 and 7 had serious availability issues due to supply issues of liquid metal used in flipcam. If they have to meet demands, they have to diversify. A flipcam phone will still come, but it will might have limited availability. It might be good sign for those who miss IP rating in the previous Zenfones. Still will be a better offering than Hasselblad Phone.

To be honest, as a moving part lover, I think this is a poor idea to put all sensors in the Flip Up anyway, the Ultra-Wide, sure it can be useful for group pictures, but the Telephoto?
Imagine having a smaller Flip Up which host both a Wide/Ultra-Wide (two focal length settings) and a ToF that can be used for both Depth sensor and other 3D applications, but also as Face ID for those who aren't bothered by the time the module take to come up.
And on the body (not in the Flip Up) a Periscope Telephoto, maybe even a 8Mp Macro too, so it looks symmetrical, even better, a good powerful Periscope Telephoto that can also do Portrait and Macro by having a deep control over its focus distance and depth of field.
