Aierlan, 04 May 2021So I tried an x60 today. The portrait mode switches to the ... moreWell, in the end, the main issue is the naming, because, what really is a Telephoto?

By definition, from Wikipedia, it is a lens type that have lenses allowing to have a focal length longer than the physical lens, in which case, by definition, all non-periscope camera on smartphones are basically Telephoto, including Ultra-Wide.

But it is clear that what we call "Telephoto", in our brain, mean something with more than 1x magnification, but above a certain threshold, as a 1.1x wouldn't be seen as such.

But it is also made to look things far away, so if a Macro has 2x magnification but can't focus to infinity, it will probably not be considered as a Telephoto.

By the way, the term "Zoom" is also often abused, as it refer to a lens which can change its focal length (magnification) and doesn't necessarily have to go above 1x to classify, such as Wide-Angle Zoom lens.

So, in the end, what we call a "Telephoto" on Smartphones is a lens that allow to see far away with a certain minimum level of magnification that we wrongly call Zoom.
This mean that if the X60 is able to take 2x pics of objects at the horizon (so as far as the eye can see as we say), then it qualifies as a Telephoto.
But if it has the background blurry and therefor can't focus to infinity, then it isn't a Telephoto but only a Portrait.

The portrait mode switches to the 13mp portrait lens to take the pics and it is basically zoomed in at 2x. It is taking the pics with this sensor rather than just being a depth sensor. You can't zoom though when you are using this portrait lens. You only have the zoom option when you switch back to the main imx598 lens. It doesn't seem to switch back to the portrait lens when you zoom in but I should have covered the main lens lens with my finger to make sure. Forgot to do this

Yes, it might be a good experience.

I think the biggest problem might be how they market the camera...
This is quite common for many things to be marketed inaccurately, as basic info is enough for most people.

Wow x60, x60 pro, x60 pro +, x60t!?! what all these declensions with the rotten denomination? One variation is not enough? And some dare to say that the name "Xperia 1 (mark) III" is bad when it is only one smartphone unlike some where it is a chicken coop.

AnonD-909757, 02 May 2021Well, don't forget that some reviewer/article writers ... moreNot sure to be honest. You seem to know a lot more on the technical details than me. I did watch the the original release presentation they had for the Iqoo 5. There they advertised the 13mp 50mm portrait lens as offering zoom as well as far as I remember but I don't know how it works to be honest. They've basically included this since the x30 series anyway whatever it is. Might try it out the next time I'm in a Vivo store out of curiosity

[deleted post]I totally agree, those was just some examples.
If only the manufacturers could give those data.
Imagine how awesome would be an open-source website with brands officially writing/fixing the corrects data!

              As a portrait shot...
And can't tell the difference between lack of resolution giving poor quality and the sensor/lens type itself...
              https://www.phonearena.com/news/Dear-phone-makers-STOP-putting-macro-cameras-on-phones_id125834

So, in this case, I don't trust reviewers when they say that something the brand say is a Portrait, is a Telephoto, because a good Portrait have built in magnification, but it doesn't mean it is good for long distance, the same way a microscope isn't meant to look at the stars.

Because as you can take awesome Portrait shots with a DSLR's Telephoto or Zoom lens, but not really the opposite, but smartphones are so good at compensating the image through software that it make a Portrait camera legit enough to think it is a low quality Telephoto.
But to be honest, seeing this video of the Vivo X50 Portrait mode :
              https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqP9PJ-VOT4
I think it may not be a hardware Portrait but only an artificial one, otherwise I don't see why it would need so much time to compute before taking the shot.

But I haven't checked much about this phone, so it may be that rather than a 2Mp Depth camera, they have a 13Mp one with a built-in magnification making it able to take Telephoto category shots?

AnonD-909757, 02 May 2021I wouldn't be so sure, the Poco F2 Pro Tele-Macro is l... moreVivo themselves refer to this as a portrait lens but they have been using this so called portrait lens on many x series phones for quite a while and it seems to be a 2x telephoto as it also seems to offer 2x zoom at least according to online reviewers. Maybe they just optimized it heavily for portraits and so called it a portrait lens.

Anonymous, 02 May 2021https://m.gsmarena.com/vivo_x60t-10831.php It's act... moreI wouldn't be so sure, the Poco F2 Pro Tele-Macro is listed as a "telephoto macro" which could lead into thinking it does both, like those Ultra-Wide who double as a Macro.
Kimovil list it as only a Portrait.
And since a Portrait shot is better taken at a certain distance with a bit of Zoom, it might be a dedicated Portrait with a built-in Telephoto, but the Focus setting might not allow at all for using it as a proper Telephoto, it might have only a shallow depth of field and a close maximum focus distance of few meters.

But both Kimovil and GSMArena aren't' really reliable when it comes to showing all the mode for each camera, Kimovil often got it wrong and GSMArena often simply it.
For example, Kimovil say the Mi 11 Ultra have a "Telephoto + macro" and GSMArena don't indicate the OnePlus 8 Pro Macro mode of the Ultra-Wide.

So it is hard to know who to believe...
So I tend to trust more article listing and tests than specs sheets for that reason, even if here it is still on rumor size and the other X60 have a Telephoto, I tend to believe that it may be only a dedicated Portrait.
Maybe the spec sheet is simply copied from the Vanilla or Pro X60 and not yet updated?

It's actually a telephoto lens afaik. The specsheet seems to confirm it. No idea why gsmarena said portait camera

With all the phones Vivo puts out, I'm surprised they don't ask a community what kind of phone they want to see (via Vivo it IQOO).

I wanna ask a general question. What handles satellite positioning in a smartphone ? For instance my phone has the Snapdragon 765 chip,, Is it some part in the chip that handles satellite positioning ? or some othe part in the phone ?

Why a 13Mp Portrait when a Telephoto can also do Portrait shots with an equally good quality, and also allow for all the Telephoto awesomeness while using the same sensor and the lenses themselves not costing much more?
At least it is a REAL Portrait, not a useless 2Mp depth camera used for fake Bokeh.
