Exynos chipset with AMD GPU coming this year, will be used in Windows laptops

10 May 2021
And perhaps tablets and even phones too. The chip will replace the Snapdragons currently used in Samsung's Windows-on-ARM laptops.

I can pretty much say that it's not gonna be anywhere near as fast as M1.

Especially due to the absence of 8 wide decoder present in M1 while Exynos will stick to 4 wide decoder to support 32 bit applications. To make up for the lost performance an 8 or 16 core processor would be required but single threaded performance will never be as fast.

It's time for some generous revolutionary changes in ARM architecture to support Windows environment at the expense of support from older designs to make up for the performance.

TheLastOracle, 10 May 2021I wonder if Samsung can do a 2x Cortex X1 + 3x Cortex-A78 +... moreMan ! You don't have any knowledge and understanding of SoC, do you ?
First you gave a core configuration which in total has 9 core(should be 8).
Then you say A78 should run 2.1-2.4GHz. (exynos already running middle cores at 2.8GHz)
{not to mention the the entire cortex core will be upgraded this year by ARM)

AnonD-940827, 10 May 2021Are you always too blind to see the truth? I guess not. But... moreExynos isn't a technology. It's just a name. If you failed to see Exynos CPU had better performance and better battery life than Snapdragon this year. It was GPU who let Samsung down and who let Samsung down all those times in the past.

Beside here the talk was about Exynos vs M1.
Neither exynos nor Qualcomm can match M1's performance. Definitely not on software level.
But not in hardware level too.
Their CPU can't match Apple M1 CPU.
          .

Anonymous, 10 May 2021No it won't because Windows for ARM just plain stinks.... moreApple is using ARM architecture. There is nothing to change there that Apple can do. If they could they have made the architecture themselves. ARM cortex core and ARM architecture arent the same thing.

786, 11 May 2021Much better than crappie Slowdragon $htdragonnn . No devel... moreSo true! Thats exactly why exynos has the highest market share, most number of custom roms and highly optimised emulators and gcam support!!! Exynos no.1! Codeaurora is a scam!!

Hoping that by next year onwards, all Exynos chipsets will be equipped with AMD. A good alternative to the current Mali GPU.

I'm looking forward to this. It's an APU but based on ARM instead of X86 architecture. It will be more energy efficient purely based on its design. The only caveat is whether it can reach M1 levels of performance. Qualcomm has failed. Hopefully, Samsung will succeed.

786, 11 May 2021Only mupprts look for efficency. That's like saying ... moreThe issue with your comparison is a vehicle is like a desktop PC. It has the means to efficiently dispose of waste heat and has electricity provided by an effectively limitless power grid. The phones can't vent waste heat efficiently, and are saddled with a limited battery.

So pursuit of raw power will eventually run into constraints much like the SD 888 which can outperform the 865 until it has to throttle at which point it can often under perform. In addition battery life on iphones is comparable to android despite smaller capacity batteries. This allows them to charge in similar periods as fast charging, which if implemented poorly reduced battery health with heat (an issue with overheating the processor too).

                              1. why would you pick 13nm over 5nm?
                              2. Exynos has Linux open source? What's the point tho? What's the catch?

technically, a [turbocharged] V6 engine can be better in performance than a V12. The Snapdragon is faster and more efficient than the Exynos, especially over "long term heavy use". It has been proven many times over and over.

Anonymous, 10 May 2021Apple also uses arm cores. Apple has better optimization. One slight correction:

Apple uses ARM instructions and designs their own custom cores. Not an expert on any of this but my understanding is apple has taken the lead by focusing not on performance outright but efficiency. Having got that edge are able to output more without running into the heat constraints Qualcomm and co using actual ARM cores encounter.
