Report: Apple will switch some iPad models to OLED starting in 2022

31 May 2021
The adoption will be slow as there isn't enough production capacity for large OLED panels to match Apple's yearly shipments.

Anonymous, 02 Jun 2021What are you using for a long enough period to suffer burn ... moreMy grandma uses her phone at full brightness and doesn’t turn it off before the night. She even asked me to turn off the auto lock. Within 6 months her phone had lot of burn in but she couldn’t notice them so it’s whatever. I think this is how many old people use their electronics. They just want it to be ready at all times.

Anonymous, 31 May 2021I like LCDs because they don’t burn in.What are you using for a long enough period to suffer burn in? If using it for 5+ years, for extremely long continuous periods, with static images, sure that's a consideration. But how many people's usage actually meets such criteria? The vast majority of people will have upgraded by then, and won't have usage patterns that results in burn in.

It would be weird that Samsung’s competition forced them to adopt AMOLED when Apple themselves buys their current OLEDS primarily from Samsung. The the more likely reason for this was that they were trying to design a better OLED that doesn’t suffer from the same burn in problem.

To a non technical person that can sound like obvious BS. But tests have been done and can prove that their sub pixel matrices have much more blue light available to use. This is to prevent burn in as it will have much more of a supply of blue to draw from as it ages. Compare the iPhone X to the Galaxy phone of that year on the used market nowadays, and you’ll see much more of the Samsung phones have burn in issues.

Knowing apple's way of pricing things, an OLED will add another grand to the original prices.

Remember that Apple introduced OLED screens on iPhones with the X model, and claimed it did not do it earlier because OLEDs had not yet met its high quality standards. The trith was that Apple waited until Samsung’s competition forced it to abandon LCD on high end iPhones and the extra profit it made by using a cheap technology.

Dame story with iPads. Apple kept using LCDs with fancy name (Retina) to protect its profit margin, not the eyes of its customers, until OLED panels got cheaper.

On top of that, Apple certainly does not enjoy having to purchase its screens from its biggest competitor.

Anonymous, 01 Jun 2021But they have lower image quality. You can't have it b... morethey don't.

if in doubt first define "image quality".
                      then compare OLED and IPS.
then try to find a pro-tier color critical monitor with OLED over several thousand bucks price-tag.

maybe then you'll see that just because OLED has tru blacks, doesn't make them into better technology. it just different. and many people, myself included, prefer IPS. especially if you plan to use your pair of eyes till old age, we don't know yet how OLED pwm flicker affect eyesight in the long run.

Anonymous, 01 Jun 2021Only cheap Oled have burn in issues Good to know that you have developed oleds that never burn in. Will be waiting for your oled tech to make it into phones.

Hate it when people try and say it's just cheap oled screens that hurt your eyes because even top end ones give me a headache and to me LCDs just look better. I'm not saying everyone has to agree just that not everyone prefers oled. Really wish reviewers would stop pushing the narrative that LCD screens should only be on cheap phones as headaches and sore eyes are a real thing for some people!
