Huawei's new mobile OS looks promising, but it needs to create its own identity separate from Android.

Harmony os is not an android fork. It has its own apps. There is Harmony os section in App Galerry, for its own apps. The case is that this os just have native support for android apps for now! As just there is a ways to use android apps on windows.

If you are using GMS, then Xiaomi is safe for now. You can sideload GMS on HarmonyOS like others tried but not advisable for you if you are not a techy type, no guarantee how long it will work, and not all apps are guaranteed to work if it depends on GMS. What I think Xiaomi will do is they will retain android for mobile phones outside of China and use HarmonyOS for phones inside China.

Current HarmonyOS maybe a fork of android. As I believe starts 2022 we'll gonna have 3 mobile OS to choose. As how well HarmonyOS will grow, 50% gonna stick with developers and another 50% is how secure and transparent HarmonyOS runs.

How can samsung sell more of their appliances if it works well with sony? That's the same reason why apple products does not work well with other brands. Ok now, let's do it on HarmonyOS with Xiaomi. You think Xiaomi will make it work well with other Chinese appliances? How can they sell their own appliances if it work well with others? Especially Xiaomi has a very small profit, you think they will not try to lock you down on their own ecosystem? So what's the difference now with android?

            I truly wish this OS will expand to tablets, smart TV internet of things as well as to cars Harmony auto. We need an OS that is streamlined and optimized like Apple iOS. Android have too much unnecessary code and Google mail too much spam. If Huawei can bring out a new version yearly with improvements I'm all for it. Hope more Chinese companies will support them.

              Funny to see the number of anonymous commenters who are terrified of any sign of Huawei succeeding. Most claim they don't care, yet comment on every piece of news related Huawei. Bad news guys, the folks at Huawei are working their asses off and it will definitely pay off. Keep your negative thoughts to yourselves.

                      I think it all depends if the other chinese manufacturers will implement harmony os too. If they will do, there's a chance for Huawei. If not, I am not seeing them in a good position in future.

                        Everything is perfect from the outside, but from the inside..
                        Trust me, I come from a former c~mmunist country. Now, I leave in another former c~mmunist country. Of course, things are better now, because they are both EU countries. But the elders (including my father) speak not so good about those times.
                        Bottom line, if ch~na or russ~a will control the world, it will not be good for us. And it will end badly.

                          I believe in Huawei. Last time Huawei said the US ban will not affect them much. We already saw where they are now based on market share and see them crying like a baby about the US ban. Now they say Harmony OS will take over. I believe them.

There's not really much of a differentiating factor yet. I think HMS adoption will be the real driver. if Huawei can manage this they will break up the smartphone duopoly.
