China as an entire country is threatened by America's blacklisting
This reason alone makes harmony OS have an incredibly high success rate
WE have never seen ever!!! a mobile OS being born under such intense political weather
So these comparisons to blackberry, Microsoft and tizen OS
And the lack of apps are virtually meaningless arguments
When Xiaomi, oppo etc can band together so they can have an alternative if they meet the same fate
The incentive to make it a success is too HIGH
Not to mention all those other business that would love a piece of that China user base even Hollywood tries to pander to China for movies

The more a "new" OS diverges from the APIs of android (in this case) the higher the development cost is. (Plus can be missing rich features until new OS API matures and/or be more buggy)
That is until cross platform dev tools fully support the "new" OS.
Keeping API compatibility means you yet a heck of a lot more apps ported sooner, so that's at least 1 reason to take a fork of android.
- speaking as a dev.

blue.sun, 13 Jun 2021OK, you're a symbian fanboy, should have said that at ... moreThat is lie lol, name that phone, in 2010 and run Android smooth, android was known as lagdroid, it was until KitKat and project butter android improved and start to became smooth, when Google replaced dalvik with Art Runtime.
At that time and until today symbian was known as multitasking king, with just 64mb ram symbian could open all apps in phone and multitasking them instant, yes it had Ui lag I won't deny but android was worse,

I wish harmony OS, a peaceful polite existence free from all tracking software, and with a complete ban of such in store, and especially a good such existence for the open version.
Now reality. Android is too complex, that you expect it to have many "kitchen sinks" in it. The common interpretability in the industry, is JavaScript. What we need is a minimum complete functional os based on that. Firefox was cancelled, has come back as a cheap phone os, but expanding that, we could reach the above goal. This also means, binaries (often arm) and a high speed interpretative byte code mode (web assembly seems a lot of binary), and simply construct the OS as binary versions of JavaScript/C (or pure assembly (it's been done before). It should then run closer to maximum performance, and it should also perform as well on a lot less memory (especially if tracking is kept out of the app store). An 16GB phone operates like an average 64gb android phone, allowing a cheaper minium regular configuration and ability to integrate more reliable flash on chipset 500MB-8GB, is possible. This would establish an app base in store, suitable for other JavaScript running operating systems.

Hemedans, 13 Jun 2021Windows has store and no one bother to use it, at that time... moreOK, you're a symbian fanboy, should have said that at first.
No, symbian was not superior to android. I still remember the need for signing and certifying apps, getting them wherever possible only to find out they were poor of quality. In 2010 I bought an android phone, everything was much easier and faster even on a low end phone (which was impossible with symbian). Symbian at that time was still more a d-pad-ready than touch-ready system. Android simply dit touch control better. That, and the fact that all symbian phones were extremely underpowered (and unable to work with multicore CPUs) killed symbian. The system had absolutely no future and Stephen Elop knew that. That was the only reason why he killed the poor system.

blue.sun, 13 Jun 2021In 2010 Symbian was a dying tragedy. It may have had a lot ... moreWindows has store and no one bother to use it, at that time even us symbian users didn't like ovi store, even today I download more apps outside playstore than I do playstore.
By 2010 android had 50k apps, we use to taunt Android it had lot of fart apps, lot of apps didn't have quality. There was more than 100k J2me apps alone, plus sis apps symbian had more than twice apps of Android.
And by saying symbian didn't have quality apps that's not true it's 2021 I can name dozens of things symbian do better than Android, at that time symbian was still superior, there was no s or note series at that time and HTC and Motorola still were Making button phones, any version of Android Froyo 2.2 or below were inferior to symbian, it was 2011 with Android 2.3 and quality hardware like galaxy s2, some HTC one series and without Nokia to compete people moved to Android by large number. From 17% in 2010 Android double) almost triple) its marketshare to 47%

I don't now when you people will stop talking about harmony OS and android OS are the same, take a look at ios 12 design is almost the same wit h the Windows OS. Because I have used Windows phones for many years, so that is possibility ios is copied from Windows OS.

I see many comments here that make me laugh. Really now, let's think like this, China have almost all brands, they will make others to be with Huawei. Google for sure will make something free to everyone to install, to escape from SUA ban. The only problem for Huawei is their processor's, not for long. The ban haven't any chance for winning, and adding more jobs as devs will be a good thing.

Hemedans, 13 Jun 2021symbian suffered from lack of apps? nice joke, Elop killed ... moreIn 2010 Symbian was a dying tragedy. It may have had a lot of apps, but no real app store to get them, quality of apps was poor, the system itself was slow with tragic UI (and yes, I had Symbian OS back in those days).

reviewtech, 13 Jun 2021i think it's just a skin also is based on android 10 ... moreNot true. the pure version of Harmony OS, Openharmony 2.0, is a brand new operating system with superior distributed architecture. It contains zero Android code and cannot run Android apps. Harmony OS on phones, however, can run both Android apps and the same natives apps that works on Openharmony. Users of Harmony OS can thereby make do with the Android apps while waiting for the more powerful distributed apps to accumulate.

VectorR, 13 Jun 2021Huawei should sell their smartphone business straight from ... moreHuawei and business alone in the US costs are 1200 jobs lost straight from the company devolpment department *850 - 350 later on. Also more jobs lost or business get lesser profit because of the ban. So if not only cost jobs but also profit . Other ban are for manufactures that has issue with more expensive materials. We have here bickes that costed before 900 euro-1100 euro and now 1400-1700 euro and nobody will buy them becasue there are cheaper brands here in Europe. Also with cars , motorcycles etc. from the US are higher and I see only higher prices.
I know America must protected them self but have to ask higher prices because materials are at more cost and we all know it make other markets cheaper for the same and on the long run if the G7, Europe will not work together and ban Asia it will be a disaster for the US economy.
