LTE-only Snapdragon 888 variant incoming, will power the Huawei P50 series

23 June 2021
It will be a new platform rather than the regular SD888 with the 5G modem turned off.

If they're not getting GMS, there's really no point in using Qualcomm. Use MediaTek instead.

5G in my country is still shit, so this is a very positive outcome for me..

Hmm seems like a good path I think sd 888 whithout 5g shouldn't be power hungry and shouldn't destroy battery life so I hope the also put in on p50 Pro and pro+ it could be success for them

[deleted post]That news is in 2020, before Mate 40 debut. Kirin 9000 has been used in many device since then. Plus there is no accuracy in that, just a tweet by some people lol. Info from TSMC & Huawei itself explains that Kirin 9000 indeed running in limited stock as of now.

I think this is rather clever; currently even in Western Europe only one percent of contracts include 5G services. It's still too expensive for most people - the cheapest contract in Austria today is 50€ per month - and you have to pay 450€ in addition for the S21+ or the Iphone 12.

That would also allow a lower price, although Huawei will also like to offer 5G versions of both the P50 Pro and the P50 Pro +.

I kinda understand the point about 5g not being available in a lot of countries and even that 4g is still plenty good enough in most places but no 5g or Google services means that for most folks everywhere except China (even there 5g is available) this phone if true doesn't make a lot of sense. Unless it's extremely cheap compared to Samsung or apple and even Xiaomi etc who will this actually appeal to? With qualcom making 4xx, 6xx, 7xx and 8xx chips with 5g capabilities even budget handsets are more future proof than this handset. Unless harmony OS catches up to Google or apple really quickly and gets developers making apps for it then Huawei hold very little appeal outside of China. This is obviously only my opinion feel free to agree or disagree. Peace guys ✌️

Feels BS,since US companies can't trade for now with Huawei .

This kinda true. Thats why vanilla P50 will only using 4G. The SD888 4G variant has been tested on Leica-branded smartphone many month ago, and indeed it is the P50. Pro & Pro+ version will use Kirin 5G. The only concern is Huawei using their own ISP on it or Qualcomm one? Considering that its a custom chipset.

I dont mind a 4G phone. My country 5G coverage maybe can be consider as mainstream for the next 4 years 🙄

                          Yo

Huawei is still so strong. And for me makes it more attractive than having GMS. As it's independent. Huawei seems to attract those that prefer decentralized crypto techies. Who don't need GMS. And don't want it either. But have a high quality alternative.

So glad Huawei have not caved in...

Only interested in Kirin chipsets, sorry.

Since 5G network is still not a thing for pretty much all countries, having an LTE-only version of an embedded 5G chipset really does make a lot of sense. It will be two to five years before we can even enjoy a stable 5G network nationwide, let alone worldwide.

Having said that, a Snapdragon-powered flagship Huawei? I really can't believe this is happening. It does make me wonder about the fate of Kirin chipsets in the future. Maybe Huawei will resume using it after they finally got a license to work with TSMC, we never know.
