Rumor: Xiaomi is working on a phone with a 192MP camera with 16-in-1 binning support

29 June 2021
This high resolution sensor should offer high quality digital zoom up to 4x. And it will have the S888 successor to do the number crunching.

I think the 200 MP camera in good light could still make good photos, using heavy post processing soft technology. I am not a photographer, I am just thinking this could be a cause, and the other one is that people like big numbers, this is why you see people smiling at a 16 GB RAM phone for example.

Take the GN2, what would be the point of an exact same size sensor, only split into 200MP instead of 50MP? The tiny 200MP pixels won't take good photos anyhow, and even though binning to 50MP for daylight they probablay will have some degradation over native 50MP sensor.

Of course time will tell if this is true or not, my point is that it is a nice thing if you can shot 50 MP photos as well(a 200 MP image would take too much of space). More MP, more the details.

Mobilemaster, 01 Jul 2021I am telling again, that this binning stuff will disappear ... moreOh, it won't. The entire point of having Quad Bayer is that you will have the light information at a more granular level, which can be used to construct higher resolution image when needed. This is crucial for a forever space-constricted smartphone camera which can't have a proper optical zoom lens coupled with a large sensor so there simply isn't any reason for it to go away. Yes, the lens assembly can be made thinner while maintaining enough quality with more advanced optical simulation techniques, or the use of new light transmitting material, but they are absolutely nothing to do with the sensor's CFA itself.

Mobilemaster, 01 Jul 2021Of course, I am not thinking of 9 mm thick phones without a... moreI get that you think humans can do amazing things, there certain things that we can't do. You want to put a phone sensor without QB and have a high MP count. The reason QB high such a high MP count is because you're shrinking the size of the pixels to fit them in the sensor. If you want to go higher in MP count to 200, 300, 600 MP, then you gotta make the sensor bigger or reduce the size of the pixels. There are limits and tradeoffs when it comes to this.

Samsung announced a 50MP camera with 0.65um pixels which is smaller than red wavelengths (unless someone wants to correct me on this).

SuuperBaka, 01 Jul 2021If you're trying to reduce thickness, while having big... moreOf course, I am not thinking of 9 mm thick phones without a camera bump, but of a 1.2 cm without a bump, or if it has to have a bump, a 1.4 cm maximum could worth it(our old phones from 2005, 2006 where also thick(the slider phones)).
Since the technology is evolving in a much faster pace, we could see surprises in the next 3, 4 years. I am not a specialist into photography, but I think humans can do amazing things. I hope we will see a 50 MP camera phone without Quad Bayer technology, so you can use the full sensor all the time.
And soon we will see phones with continuous optical zoom. That will be amazing!

What I would like to see is a 50, 60 MP camera phone without this binning stuff, so you can have the full resolution.
The Galaxy S22 Ultra is rumored to have a 200 MP camera, but with an option to take 50 MP shots as well. That sounds interesting to me! 12 MP sounds old-school.
