Rumor: the new MacBook Pros will use the M1X chipset, new MacBook Air coming in 2022 with M2

06 July 2021
Apple has traditionally used "X" to denote more powerful chipsets with more cores. The M2 should switch to a new architecture and a new node.

PMKLR3m, 08 Jul 2021Compare with Dell XPS and write your experience. For the same 16GB/512GB configuration, XPS 13 and MBP 13 can go up to $1600 and $1700 respectively. You get touch-capable OLED panel on XPS, which is nice, but MBP comes with a better mic, a more powerful set of speakers, a higher quality webcam, a better trackpad and a far longer lasting battery.

Alternatively you can opt for FHD+ display and i5-1115G4 at 8GB/256GB configuration to match it against MBA, but then MBA will keep all the advantages that MBP has over XPS while adding crisper display and much more powerful iGPU into the list and being $50 cheaper.

In case you're actually telling me to buy one and write my own review on it - sure, if you send me one I'll be happy to do that.

A lot of them also come with a docking port and a wide variety of port selections both of which are a huge plus for many kinds of office works. The current MBP 13 and MBA have one distinct advantage over them though - extremely all-rounded specs for the price range they sit in. Those business laptops usually come with a crappy 1080p display (many of which have a matte surface to compensate for low brightness and hide pixelation), a very mediocre quality webcam, weak iGPU, awful speakers that exist just for the sake of being there, bad microphones, tiny trackpad, a somewhat limited external display support, only so-so battery life, and/or a cheap creaking plastic construction. It's very hard to find ALL of those features on any Windows laptop, and even if you manage to find one, it usually costs just as much as MBP 13 or in many cases even more for the same RAM/storage configuration.

Remember Exy 9611? SoC who are basically in every samsung phone including the cheapo one.
It help cheap samsung to outperform Vivo and the gang in terms of performance/value.
Yes, several of sub $250 vivo is pricier than the pricy sammy in term of performance/value.

How? Mass production. Samsung use that chip for everything.
Same with Apple, if they design M1 that can be put into every hardware. It'll be cheaper for them in the long run. Macbook Air with M1 (had it have active cooling), it outperform old intel in value/performance.
Intel responsed by gutting the price to match the performance tough.

Aka 50% of the device costs just for a upgrade that costs in PC parts 100 Euro from the store ( and that is ignoring the fact that your losing the original 8/256gb) .

Personally, I use a Mac because Mac OS is a Unix machine like 90% of servers on the internet, easier to administrate from a Mac. A Linux on a PC would do the job but in that case I cannot use my Mac apps as well as my Windows apps.
So with my Mac with VMWare fusion, I use Win and Mac OS apps on the same desktop... cannot do it from a windows machine.
Windows machines are a bit weird to me... Windows command lines are not very sexy.
Typing for example: find . -iname blabla | grep 'toto' works on any Unix platform... not on windows.

For instance, the M1 MacBooks can run Metro Exodus (App Store version) at Ultra 1080p settings at least 30fps (provided you play in a cool environment), that game is very demanding and console quality. Doubt the Intel version can even run it at the lowest possible settings. Plus the screen is still great, its calibration and scaling is excellent (backlighting is consistent) and I like the trackpad.

Nick Tegrataker, 07 Jul 2021M1-powered MBA and MBP 13 are actually one of the most reas... moreNot in our region, SEA. M1 powered laptops were very rarely bought, in our workplace for instance, people will choose the much cheaper and also capable Ryzen 16 thread APUs Lenovo Thinkpads/Xiaoxin/Yoga laptops. Only the ones that does iOS and MacOS developers were the ones that uses those and in a company with around 30 users, only 3 of them have M1 Macbook Air/Pro.

M1 Macbooks as cheap ultrabooks? In a vacuum or Apples own universe, yes. But in reality and in broad spectrum of considerations where actual competitions exists? Nahhh...
