JustSomeRandomGuy, 08 Jul 2021why not just use electrochromic glass at the top of the dis... moreNice idea, I thought about it too (though alongside other things as by itself it won't do much), it would help to make the spot where the camera is, harder to notice under certain conditions, but the lower pixel over the camera is itself noticeable even with the same background :
              https://c.dns-shop.ru/original/st4/f9e0bf2fb20538192c5a3ee90664a39d/498d4a8aa42799710d76e75a13f942c880638a4a47a6b66c5c1a670971e7fadf.jpg

This is because the issue isn't caused by the display being opaque or not, it is mainly caused by the pixel arrangement which is different from the rest of the display.

It is like looking through a semi transparent/half opaque curtain, when you are far enough, it just makes the image blurry, but you can still see, but if you were to get extra close, you can see between all the strings nicely, but it is not possible to see behind those.
Both have different ways of affecting the view, and the disparity between the spot over the camera and the rest of the display make a similar effect, as there are bigger gaps between the pixels to allow the camera to see.

As for the camera quality issue, it is basically because the pixels and their wires aren't transparent, again, making the same effect as looking through a half opaque curtain.

Some tech combination would help there, electrochromic panel + internal image projection (rather than pixels) + a soft transition between the pixel density and projection area + polarization filtering + in glass micro lenses (not in the display, but in the glass on top of it), all those together would help to make a much better underdisplay camera tech, though the cost would be insane.
By the way, there are other type of opacity switchable glass than electrochromic :

why not just use electrochromic glass at the top of the display? it's the same type of glass that the OnePlus Concept One used to turn the camera glass disappear and reappear. think about it: a thin strip portion on the top of the display is electrochromic glass. whenever the selfie cam is needed, that portion of the display turns transparent, just like on the OnePlus Concept One, and then turn opaque once it is not used. wouldn't that resolve the whole issue about in-display cameras?

Making underdisplay camera when there are things like disappearing camera is like trying to make cars with square wheels and "fixing" the roads so they are compatible rather than making round wheels...

Sadly i doubt it will have the same cameras as the 30 Ultra. But if it comes with the same rear setup that the ultra despite the SoC, it will be in my list of phones compare and choose at the end of the year.
