Video: How the Nokia 808 PureView made camera phone history

14 July 2021
Take a trip down memory lane with one of the best camera phones ever made.

One of the things which is often overlooked is that those Nokias had good enough lenses which could actually resolve even 20mp pretty easily and 40mp quite OK. Today's phones struggle with finer details at 12mp even in flagships because the lens aren't great. A good lens is very important.

Doesn't give much meaning to put a high megapixel sensor in a phone, but only let ai mode use it. Imagine being able to use manual mode and get raw files with it. But nope, only ai controlled jpg files on the high megapixel sensor. Manual and raw on the 12MP sensor only.

Anonymous, 15 Jul 2021They did. Nobody bought them. So they stopped making them. This is not true, After Nokia Discontinued Symbian Android and Ios took its Place, but until 2010 when Elop released Burning Memo Symbian was Top Os, android had. less than 20% marketshare if my Memory is correct. Even popular Apps at that Time like Whatsapp were Released First to Symbian before Android.

Android became serious Os for people to consider when they release Gingerbread Android 2.3, together with hardware like s2 they easily Surpass Windows phone. But previous os like Froyo, Eclair etc were not that good, it didn't even have Copy and paste.

At That Time 2010 Device like Nokia 5230 alone sold 150M device, until today if you Exclude Apple propaganda its still most sold smartphone.

Anonymous, 15 Jul 2021Thats false. Facebook can accept up to 4.2Mp in 1:1 format.... moreFirst things first: https://www.facebook.com/help/266520536764594/. The highest resolution Facebook can accept is 2048x2048. 16:9 5MP equals to 2984x1680. 2048px in 16:9 format means 2048x1152, which translated to 2.36MP. "So much for plenty resolution" my backside. People don't upload 1:1 photos on Facebook, they do that on Instagram.

When Nokia did things right ...

AnonD-936656, 14 Jul 2021iPhone, Samsung and Pixel phones shoot better picstures.Lol please, not that joke. The iPhone is an oversharpened mess. Same thing with Samsung when it comes to noise reduction.

Anonymous, 14 Jul 2021Instead of 5MP, the downsampling should have been few more MP. 5MP is more than good enough for social media sharing. In fact, the highest resolution for photo upload on Facebook is 3.2MP. 5MP is plenty.

Olym1mk2, 14 Jul 2021Still in 2021, we haven't seen any match for this. Onl... moreMore Megapixel is fine by me since we can have a better oversampling technique (imagine the Nokia's PureView algorithm inside a 108MP sensor), but the ever-constant AI interruption alongside the excessive oversharpening and noise reduction effect really turns me off so hard. That is why I still use my current Lumia 950 for mobile photography. If I must be brutally honest, I still don't see Quad Bayer array taking over the native RGB array when it comes to realistic colour and detail.

Had this phone. The strength is the optic and color. Very smooth physical lens bokeh.
The major drawback is low dynamic range. The output is pre-AI age. Looks very similar to a camera.

nokia fans, me included (was), consider this as the best camera phone nokia ever made... (but never had one)
nokia n8 being the second (i still have two)
the photo quality on n8 is still better in some way than those of camera phones today with oversharpening and oversaturated output... but it lack manual setting...
that is why nokia lumia 1020 was made, aside from the high resolution, the quality is great (boosts a little on yellow color)
never had any nokia under hmd...
now focused on xperia...
and lg for collections...
may consider another nokia, if i can find older working models... for collections...

And it still can give modern smartphones with Quad Bayer sensors a serious fight thanks to its DSLR-like true-to-life photo quality. Also, that Xenon flash is a real gem when shooting moving objects. What I really love about Nokia's oversampling technique is that it manage to produce an astonishing 4.0┬Ám pixel when shooting at 5MP resolution without sacrificing its colour rendition algorithm. Just about the only thing the 808 missing is OIS and RAW format support or else this would still be my preferred mobile photography gear.

Anonymous, 15 Jul 2021They did. Nobody bought them. So they stopped making them.To the best of my info, a lot of Nokia phones used to sell anyways, even without a single ad (10-15 lakh units easily) but Android's marketing proved better in the long run.

In fact, I think 808 meant SOS... Nokia's call to its fans for saving it.
Unfortunately, we the fans just were into apps, apps and more apps, now we face the radiation every moment.

Its unlikely they will want Symbian anymore. Honestly, I still have a working 808 and its the best phone ever, its smartphone, not over smart phone.

Anonymous, 15 Jul 2021Thanks to Microsoft interruptionMicrosoft and many other companies are the victims of the big brothers that pushing every gadget to speak 1 language, based on 1 single operating system platform governed by international consortium x/open

N808 made history, period!
Whose last real Nokia and whose first and best in many categories when it came out. Whose full rounded phone from tips to toes. Software whose a let down, lack of apps and short suport. Whose built as tank still got one in working condition and so do other people. Camera whose/is a hit and miss, when it's a hit still nothing comes close to it at least that's my opinion. Fancy processing which it can't do can be done later elsewhere including HDR. From all records it hold true time it still keeps one for best mics ever integrated in a phone thanks to which it's still great for live audio and not so bad video recording especially for complex things like music. Had a good but nothing to write home about DAC - hedaphone out (Ti) with obove average power out (still nort from proper unbalanced out - 2V).
They don't make them like that anymore.

@GSMArena, you should compare it to Xiaomi Mi11 Ultra and a DSLR camera of your choice. Strictly photo comparison, as video on 808 is really outdated
