Shui8, 12 Aug 2021I've use Huawei from Mate 9, up to P40 currently (plen... moreI had another look at that sample and I don't think it could even be explained by face blurring, because even the hair is smudged, not the edge around the face but all the hair visible, all the while that is consistent with P20 series' general texture behavior, unless you're claiming that something happened so that they apply beauty mode to everything in the frame, because nothing's not smudged.

Master AI on - Auto HDR (image stacking depends on scene), scene detection (some colors & contrast boost, auto Portait Mode apply the filter), Super Res algorithm used in intermediate zoom, auto beauty filter applied. Can adjust manually focus area & light metering by tap to hold.
Master AI off - Auto HDR (image stacking depends on scene), No scene detection (no colors & contrast boost, no auto Portrait Mode), Super Res algorithm used in intermediate zoom, no beauty filter applied. Can adjust manually focus area & light metering by tap to hold.
Pro Mode - No HDR (no image stacking), No scene detection (no colors & contrast boost), Super Res algorithm not used, no beauty filter applied. Can adjust manually focus area & light metering by tap to hold. Everything else manually.
Experience, experimenting on it, thoroughly.

Whenever it ... moreIt was discovered a few years ago that in the case of Huawei models the face softening couldn't be completely turned off, at least Notebookcheck made the mention but IIRC there were others. Even if that issue were fixed in later models it definitely was the case for P20. Other textures were clearly bad too. Phonearena made a low light shootout at the time and one of the statues was rendered into wax by the P20, or was it P20Pro I don't remember, but it stood out enough that they made it into one of those comparison sliders with another model.

But some places like here and anand mostly make sense and are usually very correct. Displaymate too.
You just have to be well informed and research and cross reference things. Make informed decisions.

Whenever it detects a face, some beauty filter applied, especially in Portrait Mode. If you know how Huawei's camera app in default, beauty mode are sets to '2', just adjust it to '0', job done. The thing is reviewer doesnt bother on that settings & just snap. Samsung did the same thing when using Auto.
Simply by turn Master AI off, use Aperture mode instead of Portrait Mode, or go to Pro Mode, that filter will never used in image processing.

... moreI have no idea how they managed to waste so many photos because up to a couple years ago not even their own samples support their breakdowns of the scores. After intense backlash in the comments and a lot of censorship(deleting comments they don't like) they now cherry pick the samples they display on their site, so while the samples match up better with their descriptions, the models they review sometimes don't exhibit the same performance elsewhere like GSMA, NBC and Anandtech.
This sample was particularly infamous and even you may have seen it before:
