Xiaomi Mi Router AX9000 review

23 August 2021
The Xiaomi Mi Router AX9000 is a true behemoth of a router, but is it actually a good Wi-Fi 6 upgrade path?

As much as it has some of the most decent hardware the software is crippling. No firewalls or rules to block sites or I'm just blind. Can't use it as Accesspoint or you have to go thru manually route (but hey you can use it as a switch so there is that)

Anonymous, 23 Aug 2021You're think other manufacturers don't engage in ... moreNo, I do not. I do remember state-sponsored entities intercepting Cisco equipment during shipping, revere-engineering their firmware, and inserting their own implant. Cisco was not happy about it when they finally discovered it, nor collaborated to in inserting those implants -- that is a world of difference for the argument being made!

Anonymous, 23 Aug 2021But America is not bad /s I guess every country spies on... moreAgree. All countries that have the capabilities to do it as part of their national security have people working on monitoring and analyzing traffic. These countries setup their sniffers at their countries ISPs. Also encryption keys are limited from most aspects to 256 bits in order to allow live monitoring and live decryptions of contents. That's the reason for being the standard. On the other hand my previous post is about routers having these instructions out of the box - to provide your data back to the company that built them without your consent. There're some known offenders, but you also have some trustworthy companies. All I said is that I would love to buy Chinese cheaper network gear but that would be a risky move, the routers from some Chinese brands I tried, I've tested sniffed and saw some strange traffic out. After making some package captures and tests to try to understand how all is being encoded. Anyway, think what you want.

Anonymous, 23 Aug 2021You're think other manufacturers don't engage in ... moreOthers maybe...don't know it all, just what I tested at my home. Cisco?! They don't unless they were contracted/obligated to do so. First think on some of the license features of a Cisco router - it may/may not need to make packet storage and analysis. Also understand Cisco is often contracted for the Cisco solutions as AppD and Meraki that require such features. Also Cisco sells NOC/SOC (CMS) services, on both cases Cisco customers contract their staff to make live monitoring. Maybe you need to inform yourself about Cisco products and services instead of making false claims. Being this part of my area of expertise take my word, my point is that exists some more trustworthy companies than others, unfortunately in this area the Chinese ones are not to be trust. PS.: I'm not American, I don't work for Cisco and I have many Chinese friends.

I guess every country spies on you in some regard, and I mean people worry about chinese routers, meanwhile 99% of the smartphone market uses OS that origins from the US.

I am not saying which one of the 2 countries is worse, that hugely depends on what you ask about one.

Remember Cisco sniffing on corporate clients through the their routers?

So after Asus and Netgear, now Xiaomi goes the "unpractial ugly router" route.

Oh well at least it does the job, just like the other ugly ones from Asus and Netgear

Simplicity is fine but as in final thoughts has been said this thing have a lot of potential but isnt used the way it should be.

I bet that thing will start flying, walk around or explode if you step on it.

Is so cheap to get fast Chinese branded wifi routers, is really tempting but, can't rely on them as mentioned, sniff your own network if you have one of those you'll see what I mean. On the day I won't have to worry with the impact of compromising my home devices data be sure I wouldn't bother anymore. Till than, not taking the risk.

For me buying a router from Xiaomi is a big risk for privacy, they have a few bad records behind.
They are collecting datas for a reason that is unknown to us but known and useful for some people.
So, may be I've a bit paranoia but better than having an distance eye over my home.

Yes yes, we all know about Google, apple and all of american companies.
