Now smart phones are much more than a phone.
They are HD entertainment hub, They are high speed information hub, connecting you with the world with a comfort as it is a small part of body. No need to tie to power socket via a cable only mobility.

I can read news paper in morning or a book in pdf in night in my bed and fall asleep without worrying about system shutdown.

i always have a decent camera in hand, i can have a HD dose of entertainment when i want. Utilizing time on traffic signal by sending an important mail.

I love it because all these are in my pocket.

It is worth pointing out that the market most definitely needs new technology for devices that are engaged in production of content. Most new touch based offerings are designed for consumption of content, not production. That is why high end powerful laptops will remain for some time yet.

Windows Phone third, maybe, but if Windows 8 will not turn out to be the new Vista and once those non RT tablet prices drop to reasonable levels we might see a bit of a stir in the market. I myself can't wait to get me one of those x86, sleek, touchscreen beauties. Even ultrabooks will go the netbook way. I don't suppose those Windows slates will have the same percentage of market share the PC does nowdays but still, making a move from a mouse operated x86 Win7 to a touch operated x86 Win8 makes more sense than switching over to Android or iOS altogether, at least for those who need a device for different tasks than just updating facebook or tweeting crap.

I hope the companies are thinking seriously about this growing problem. Does anybody know whether recycling electronic products really helps in disposing off the unit completely?

If we add up the smartphones+tablets+phablets sold in the last few years it will definitely be close to the population already. I think if we add up all the mobile devices, it will be a lot lot lot more than the entire human population. Who knows, may be 15 billion... just a guess.
