Kuo: Apple will use redesigned MacBooks to boost mini-LED adoption in the industry

17 August 2021
As more companies jump on board the mini-LED train, production capacities will rise and costs will fall - a win-win for Apple.

Even should their processors be 2x the performance at 1/2 the price I would never buy one because it's useless for my professional Engineering work.

Now the mini-Led adoption is even more curious. I have a iPad Pro 12.9 for work, and whilst it has a good screen Apple does not give you access to HDR or 10bit usage of their screen, only SDR content. Which then begs the question why does Apple insist on such a high quality screen when it cannot be used for professional or creative tasks?

At best these are toys or an expensive basic computer.

That's the thing: Now that Apple makes its own chips and thus can bring down the cost, it has the capability to add more expensive components like mini-LED while maintaining a reasonable pricing. This will make it hard for the competition to mach performance and specs while beating Apple in price.

AnonF-1013367, 17 Aug 2021Third* Can't match OLED.That's not the early feedback we are getting from mini-LED in the better TVs. OLED needs ABL to prevent killing itself in high brightness scenes; once ABL kicks in, you very similar complaints to the ones of regular LED, only instead of being with dimly lit areas now is with brightly lit areas. LED and OLED both have their pros and cons for better PQ, and are pretty much complement each other in this issue.

Mini-LED maintains the existing LED advantages in bright scenes, but improves in the shortcoming it had to OLED (contrast and resolved detail in dimly lit areas). My friends who could not stand these LED shortcomings and were forced to buy OLED are now very impressed by the latest mini-LED TVs. It's early days for mini-LED, so don't expect it to be perfect, but it already shows real promise.

          Nope.

          "black and gray level"
Higher contrast (which I already mentioned) and better blacks are logically equivalent. As for grey levels, that's a nope as well.

          "efficiency"
          Huge no.

[deleted post]Since I bought my first Mac, I haven't used Windows for over ten years and I haven't missed anything. What is funny, I recently played with Windows running on Parallels on my base model MAcbok Air, M1 with just 8 GB of RAM and it runs surprisingly fast. I compared the geekbench score with that on my friend's Dell XPS 13 7390 with i7 which is 300 dollars more expensive than mine and it scores less in geekbench despite running Windows natively. Since I made this test I've learned that a Parallels update has increased the performance further but I can't test it because I don't need Windows so I have deleted it. I cannot imagine what will be when Apple introduce beefier versions on the M chip. Even today an M1 Mac can run Windows better than most computers around the price of a MacBook Air.

Anonymous, 18 Aug 2021Yes. That is very bad issue. "Only noticeable when you watch mostly black HDR contents in the pitch black room" isn't really bad per se.

"production capacities will rise and PRODUCTION costs will fall," and ~only~ production costs, because hell will freeze over before any company will lower the consumer price.
