Weekly poll: what kind of zoom camera setup do you want on your next phone?

05 September 2021
Variable focal length cameras, especially the ones that can do continuous zoom seem to be the next big thing. But they will be expensive.

CarlZeiss optics
10 x loseless zoom like Nokia preview
Xneon flash, with triple flash
4k screen
700ppi
Sony 1 and quarter inch sensor
With 10mm bump
Huge 2 inch circle bump

I prefer to have optical zoom lens that provides continuous zoom starting from 70-80mm equivalent focal length, but of course only if it shoots photos with usable image quality. I believe it will be even harder to implement than Sony's dual FL telephoto lens, and we all know how good (Xperia 5 III) or bad (Xperia 1 III) it ended up being.

Vegetaholic, 05 Sep 2021Lol, its like everybody is photographer here continuous zoo... moreUmm.. didn't you read the article before answering the poll?

Anonymous, 05 Sep 2021"As Google showed with the Pixel, it can be done well,... moreI'm starting to feel like you should take your Pixel 3a to a repair service before claiming as if all Pixel phones suck at digital zoom. Your personal experience does not match what I have seen from dozens of samples (including 2x/Night Sight samples) from Pixel 3, Pixel 4 and Pixel 5 on the internet over the last 2 years, on top of that I've also seen ones that clearly show the increase in spatial and chroma resolution (Less moire, less false colours but more accurate pattern rendition).

"3x/5x dual focal length like on the Xperias"
          LOL

            Anonymous, 05 Sep 2021www.gsmarena.com/oppo_find_x3_pro-review-2238p5.php#image34... moreNo.

Anonymous, 05 Sep 2021Correction: www.gsmarena.com/sony_xperia_5_iii-review-2... moreThat's because the reviewer pointed the camera downwards on Oppo's shot whereas he held it parallel to the ground on Xperia's. This really is basic stuff you should've known by now. Moreover, you don't seem to have any idea what freeform lens technology is supposed to fix - it's used on an UWA camera so that lines look straight and not warped even without applying too much or any software lens correction. It also reduces chromatic aberration significantly which is evident if you look at photos taken by Find X3 Pro, OnePlus 9 Pro and Mate 40 Pro+'s UWA shooters side by side with those from Xperia 1 III, Galaxy S22 Ultra etc.

Honestly your knowledge regarding photography has been appalling, you first claimed that HDR results in oversaturated colours, then pixel size doesn't matter for image quality, and now this? FFS man just cut the crap already.

In the Phone Finder, I want to specify the zoom of the phone, so I can filter all phones that don't have 10x optical zoom, also known as crap!

                  digital zoning isn't real, it's zuckz 😷

You must be an expert in the field anyway, so your statement is probably more valid than an actually existing object.

The 2.9x optical zoom on xperia gets beaten by digital zoom from phones like Mi 11 Ultra.
That was a terrible implementation by Sony.

Lol, its like everybody is photographer here continuous zoom my ass, well its definitely not possible, so not sure why people even selecting this option. Periscope 3x or 5x is what most need though it is expensive.

When will the Oppo setup be available?

Dometalican, 05 Sep 2021I wholeheartedly agree with this. I've always wondered... moreI'd rather no. Different focal length have different spatial warp and distortion. Check dolly zoom.

Sometimes, i just wanted to bring main sensor back to the standard 35-40mm ish focal length, like in the days of iPhone 4. Enlargening the sensor enforces them to widening the focal length (like Sharp and Leica's 1" phone which have 19mm main camera bcs apparently they can't fit a longer lens while keeping the phone reasonably thin), which is a bit redundant if you also have a dedicated ultrawide camera.

Anonymous, 05 Sep 2021"Continuous zoom lenses" Zoom lens always means ... moreThe 35mm equivalent of it. If you're new to photography, that's one of the most basic.

Ok, listen up! You ready for this! :)

While I selected optical zoom + digital, this should be a multichoice question.

Continuous 10-20 optical zoom and digital zoom, are what I really want on a top end phone (of $300, like the old days of, 3-4 years ago!). But, other phones don't have to have all this. I'll give you the lay down, ya see!

For a cheap phone, 200mp digital is enough, even 108mp. 200mp is like 64 times the pixels till you get near 1920 pixel wide ye all. For a ol cheap phone, of less than $200 what you expect? 1-10 optical is enough on ya cheap phone. It doesn't have to be continuous. You can just digital zoom and continuos digital zoom between each zoom lens. So, even 108mp is enough. On 48/50 mp it starts to get low amount of quality digital zoom.

But, when you get to higher end phones, you need that extra QualiteA, Woo! So, continuous optical and 48mp+ sensor. Digital zoom using at least one sensor pixel per recorded pixel is fine, nearly as good as good optical. 10x optical is fine. In pro area, we like 20x optical.
But, in highest end 200mp+ with 10-20x continuous zoom. The you can rig up and creep out those news reports. "Da, plane went down over there you see? I've got 4k video on it, on my hybrid 40x digital optical zoom lens, from half a 1/4 mile away. What you mean that Opera walking around over there? Boy, that zoom good on this!"

                                        Well. See ya all!

                                        Wayne Da-Max!
                                        (Wear masks!).
