And it still costs less than a macbookpro with just 16 gig of ram.

The M1 is the start and shows how much power Apple can bring to their 5nm SoC and drawing in total just 20W-25W from the outlet!!!!!!

Anonymous, 04 Oct 2021Yeah great integration.. Good luck upgrading RAM or SSD on ... moreThat's like saying graphic cards are bad because you can't upgrade VRAM on them, but at the same time you expect same speeds as for on-board VRAM. It doesn't work that way. You either have it onboard and it's stupid fast because it's physically next to CPU cores and is operating at exact number of channels and has exact specifications of clock and timings. Or you have an upgradable stick of RAM kilometers away from CPU with questionable timings and speeds, preferably running in single channel mode. You'd be surprised how many laptops come in single channel mode which is inferior on so many levels. Macs with M1 don't know any of those issues, they always operate at epxected peak performance. Downside is of course lack of upgradability.

So they can advertise their own silicon as much more advanced the following year.. That allone should make you rethink your trust in apple.

Define "real work"? There are worlds of a difference by how real work is defined between tech illiterate people who let themselves ripoff by apple, or actual professionals who know what they do.

It... moreOnly if you rely on the codecs apple implemented in the SoC Design, if you edit video all day every day on the go, in the exact SW/HW/Video-Codec combination apple intended it for. Then it makes sense. Apart of that, you will loose out on performance. I'd prefer the versatility on Win Notebooks anytime, but each on it's own. As soon as AMD/Nvidia/Intel add the support for HW-Acceleration for a certain Video-Codec into the Chip-Design, there is no advantage for the M1.

Most of the gsmarena readers are just student/jobless and has no idea about real work. If they had the slightest idea of real work, they would at least keep quiet in a laptop/PC thread.

Get... moreYou are conparing a gaming laptop that doesn't even take heat, battery endurance and quality of other hardware components into an account to an ultrabook promised to deliver good performance on the go, anywhere for a long period of time. I dare you to use that so-called Ryzen H 'laptop' for 30 minutes without getting a low temperature burn on your legs or pair it with two 4K external monitors. And no, the audience looking into ultrabook segment is not interested in using a bulky gaming laptop that quickly crawls to halt when unplugged to reduce power consumption yet still only lasts for 3-4 hours of moderate usage.

Macbook Air and Pro are reasonably priced compared to other premium Windows ultrabooks with a similar SSD and RAM configuration and usually tops them in several key hardware components. Nobody is claiming M1 will have a faster CPU and GPU combo than a 16 core Ryzen paired with RTX3080, but let's be real here, Apple's pricing can be easily justified this time around.

Not possible what? So better just throw it away in a few years, but apple is oh so environmentally- and customer friendly... This chip design is a big ass excuse for the manufacturer to gain control over everything. So they can sell you a model with more RAM for an excessive price. Or aswell just shut down the SoC if they decide so...

If we take die size/transistor amount and the massive amount of cache in consideration, the M1 is nowhere as special. It is efficient for sure, and there currently is a lack of alternatives for that on the open market. But I wouldn't want to rely on what apple gives (and takes from) you. If you really want to do professional work or are a serious power user, just slap a Ryzen 5950x or Threadripper 3970x into your machine, paired with a RTX 3090 or RX 6900 or the Quadro/FirePro eqivalent, if you are into modeling and stuff, and call it a day. Way more performance, by a multiple factor.

Anonymous, 04 Oct 2021You can build a desktop for a lower price with much better ... moreBenchmark scores alone don't tell the whole story.
Its GPU may be weaker, but doing such tasks that rely heavily on it are silky smooth and rapid fast on the M1, while it needed the power of an RTX 3090 to deliver a mostly similar experience. The reason is simple, because the M1 is intelligently designed and integrated by Apple to work well with various programs that it will be intended to use it for. Try heavy video editing and let's see if any of your Windows-powered laptop with supposedly "more powerful" GPU can finish exporting files in less than 10 minutes like the M1 can.
And yes, I'm talking about laptops here because it's inappropriate to compare it to a desktop since you can't bring it elsewhere anyway (but I still believe the M1 will give out a great fight).

Tldr: benchmarks aren't everything. You may have all the horsepower under the hood, but if you're not utilizing it as efficiently as you possibly could, then such power will be significantly meaningless as it's not being used properly.

Just an example: Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3, AMD Ryzen 7 4800H, 512 GB SSD, 16 GB RAM, Nvidia GTX 1650 Mobile, Proper I/O ports = 960.- in Switzerland. A similar specced Macbook (ram, ssd) is 1440.- here. And thats just for the Air, not the pro..

The GTX 1650 is around 30% faster than the M1 graphics. The Ryzen 4800H reaches 10,5k points in cinebench R23, the M1 7,7k... Not even taking into account how fast the MB Air will begin to throttle because it has to be an ultrathin lifestyle toy..

Apple devices are sleek and come with good displays, don't get me wrong. But if we are talking pure max performance on all cores, no chance..

Sure desktop isn't comparable with mobile, but why should I buy a mac mini with M1, if I can build a faster desktop for the same money with double the amount of ram..
