Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro rumored to get four Android updates, five years of security patches

13 October 2021
If true, they'd be the longest-lived Pixels ever.

4 to 5 years of updates is plenty, unless you have battery changed every 2 to 3 years.

Sure that you can make a brand new phone model with the latest OS version every year, but that is literally e-waste in action. That kind of ethos doesn't work with flagship abd even premium upper midrange smartphones.

There are loads of apps that still support 7.0 Nougat to this day. That said, it all depends on the app developers themselves to see how long they would support a certain Android OS version.

Iphones give 6 years of updates of iOS and run like a dream and here even the pixel line up can't even give 5 years of OS update shame.

A bit late... Just switched last week to iPhone exactly because of software support.

You said it all in the last part. Actually, there is no easy way to buy a Pixel phone in Croatia. If one can mamange to find it, it will be selling at a redicolous price and really not worth nor effort or money. I can’t understand that Google is doing like this. On the other hand, Apple has it’s own stores, not to mention one could buy an iphone at every carrier via contract. So it shouldn’t be so complicated.

We also demand that. Buying a flagship phone around and abve 1000 dollars doesn't make any sense for 2 years Android Upgrade and security patch. Some brands even doesn't bother to the customer. Good initiative and offer by Google. Hope the phone will be made available in all regions.

Wouldn't be surprised if people on here think 5 years isn't enough

I think even samsung provides 3 or 4 upgrades to their flagships. Google with lots of revenue from playstore in app purchases, google services, ads, etc can do better than this I guess, as google gets more money as long as people use the device but not the case for other OEMs where they want people to upgrade to get profits

How will it match Apple? Apple is providing upto 6 years of updates. iPad Air 2 will receive it for around 8 years (from 2014 to 2022). It is not in the same league.

Even with 4 years of Android software updates and 5 years of security patches, and even if Pixels were sold worldwide and were as widely available everywhere as iPhones, sales figures for Pixel phones still won't change much because of Google's brand cockiness... Overpricing a phone with mediocre hardware and limited software capability just because of the Google name? Seriously?

Good luck Google! Keep on dreaming and hallucinating into thinking you'll replicate Apple's iPhone success. It won't happen ever because your android software is not exclusive to Pixels and is not superior to the customized ones from Samsung and other phone manufacturers. And didn't I say your hardware is mediocre despite the high price and limited options? No dual SIM, no headphone jack, no expandable storage, no 256GB/512 GB internal storage options (because of your vested interests in your cloud business) plus limited camera setup because of your arrogance that your GCam software can compensate for lack of telephoto?

Forget it Google. Stick with your software business. Your logo alone just doesn't appeal at all to almost all Android users. Well, at least not in the same way an Apple logo does for iPhone fanatics. The mere sight of a new shiny Apple logo can literally make iPhone fanatics lose their sanity: https://youtu.be/r0QD3OWqWKM

My note 3 practically unsuable now with the last software update it got.
My pixel 2 xl with its last OS update, and it still run quite smooth, but often run into problem, sudden app stops

For someone like Google, this should be no problem at all. Even Fairphone can give five Android OS updates, and they are a small niché company.

Razr 5G Fan, 14 Oct 2021I personally think updates are overrated. I updated my iPho... moreHaving used iOS in the past, one can easily come to the conclusion that it's a scam which only iFaaaans fall for.

The phone becomes obsolete or battery life deteriorates badly before support ends.
Every new version of iOS slows the phone down until it becomes unbearable to use.
Apps stop working unless you keep upgrading the OS.
Most new features are not supported on old phones either because the hardware doesn't support them or they are deliberately left out on old phones.

I really don't miss Apple or their software support.

I personally think updates are overrated. I updated my iPhone SE 1 to iOS15 and it made it horrendous. The best software for each phone tends to be the one it originally came with. Companies are trying to impress you early. When the warranty expires, they don't care. The next update makes it worse so they can force you to upgrade to another phone.
