Nick Tegrataker, 19 Oct 2021In case you missed it, the 4-core and the 8-core processors... moreThese people don't listen to reason, Nick. They all tout their gaming laptops over Macs, while not realising that their beloved games are mostly created using macOS machines. :(

Apple seems to put a lot of variants for the new ARM CPU. For M1 Pro, there's an 8-core CPU/14-core GPU, a 10-core CPU/14-core GPU, and a 10-core CPU/16-core GPU. As for the M1 Max, there's a 10-core CPU/24-core GPU and a 10-core CPU/32-core GPU. At this point, I wonder what kind of difference in terms of performance all of those CPUs will exhibit.

Long ago, Mac is for work. Windows is for playing.

But now, these Macs are so powerful and efficient. They can work, and at spare time, just load up Windows 10 VM as virtual machines, then run any games they want. (With M1, you can play most casual games and AAA games at low frames, now with these pro chips i think even AAA games at decent frames will be possible)

Sure it goes thru virtualisation then emulator. MacOS -> Parallels -> Windows Arm -> emulate x86. But the raw power will overcome all these.

There is totally no comparison in the laptop market.

The next hurdle would be the desktop machines.. To overcome PC with huge dedicated graphics.. something hardcore gamers would still require.

GPU manufacturers always market their GPUs for gamers. Apple definitely has the calibre to push the gaming industry, they even promoted Apple Arcade. Of course, MacOS has always been targeted for professionals.

It'd be interesting for me to see if a GPU non-gaming benchmark does exists because I haven't seen one. Generally, those tasks are more oriented towards CPU or RAM rather than being GPU dependent.

can play the last battlefield now?

Some great looking numbers! Now my question is: Architecture-wise, is M1X still based on older A14 (=M1) or A15?

There are games coded specifically for MacOS and there are some that run just fine through compatibility layer. But ultimately, it's not a gaming platform. Though with enough sales and interest, they may become. There is enough grunt and it's rather easy to specify requirements unlike with PC's with billion hardware configurations.

It was just a matter of time before Apple pulls an Intel and introduces market segmentation for their processors. So now we have the M1 with less GPU cores, M1 with full GPU cores, M1 Pro and M1 Max for 4 tiers of products. I'm very interested to see how the new processors will perform.
