Xiaomi to bring 108MP camera to Redmi Note 11 series

26 October 2021
It will once again offer 9-in-1 pixel binning with 2.1 μm large pixels.

HM2 is an ACTUAL 108mp sensor, it uses 9 to 1 pixel binning so that a 3x3 grid of pixels will function as a single 2.1um pixel. Please don't even comment in Gsmarena if your IQ is that low

I LITERALLY explain how it works and for ease of understanding I provided examples images showing how those sensors actually PHYSICALLY have those 48, 56, 108 etc millions of pixels and how both binning and outputting full resolution works.

But I understand that Xiaomi is playing a game of numbers: the largest megapixel camera is bound to attract more casual buyers than OIS which many don't even know of. Same as 120W charging. Most buyers just want a phone that can take good photos and with decent battery life.

                  Dips, 26 Oct 2021It's not even 108 mp ,it's converted to 108 mp al... moreTL;DR :
The sensor actually is 108Mp and there are ways to actually get the full resolution from it.

                  Longer answer:
Pixel binning mean you take, for example a 48Mp Quad Bayer camera, and do a 2x2 binning, meaning you take 4 pixels and combine them as if there was one bigger pixel, like this :

                  https://cdn57.androidauthority.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/quad-bayer-48mp-android-authority.jpg

In short, the Bayer is the color filter, each photoreceptor are only monochrome, and in top of them there is an RGB (typically) filter that only lets one of the three pass through per pixel, that's how you get colors from CMOS, a little like how LCD and Oled aren't really RGB but rather use sub-pixels.
In the image, the first layout (traditional Bayer) is how a normal Bayer with no binning is, then you have the Quad Bayer layout who show how it can get transformed into a binned 48Mp to 12Mp.
And the series of images below explain how it can be re-arranged to get the original resolution out of a Quad Bayer.
The same apply to any other binning, including the 108Mp who use a 3x3 binning, 108/(3*3) = 12.

Those two images explain it well :

Seeing some previous comments... I'd like to make a round up.
-The cam IS indeed a 108MP model, however it renders to 12MP, by combining nine 0.7um pixels into a relatively large 21um pixel. More often than not you gain nothing by using the fullres 108MP mode and you incur longer processing times and large file sizes.
-There is another 108MP cam model out there which has 8um pixels but bunches them up in fours, rendering to 27MP with an equivalent of 1.6um. I would prefer it, but for some reason that model has not gained a lot of traction, and few phones have it (see Mi Note 10).
-Redmi Note Pros are a lower midrange series, that has some current midrange stuff, like UFS 2.1 and a series 7 Snapdragon, plus... the higher end 108MP cam. That's the bonus of this series. Want a series 8 SD? The X3 pro is better for you, but you go back a 48MP cam with 0.8um pixels. Want OIS? At the moment, that belongs to another phone tier.
