That's impressive software support.

Narazumono, 24 Nov 2021Most Android phones can run atleast 4 software updates. The... more"Most". Being actually basically none. Samsung is one of rare exceptions that has released software updates for many years per device. Most other brands, you're lucky if you get 3. And it most often depends on price you paid for it. OnePlus is a painful example of that. Only flagship model gets 3 years. The lowest end N models get only 1 year. ONE YEAR. And I bet they don't even release monthly updates actually monthly within that sad 1 year. But OnePlus isn't the only example, almost entire Android segment is like this, again with Samsung being a bright example of opposite behavior. I hate them for certain other things, but not for software support in recent years. They are really doing well.

bruhman, 24 Nov 2021ok, he said average not allHe said „who wants a phone for six years?“ well I‘m at 5 now so it’s not far off

Most Android phones can run atleast 4 software updates. The reason they don't is because companies want you to give them money by buying new phones. They don't want you to stick with the same phone for years so the best way is to stop supporting them, forcing people to upgrade or stay with an unsupported device

I'll wait. Fairphone 2 apparently launched with Lollipop 5.1. How many "other" Android phones that launched with Lollipop 5.1 received Android 10 ? Lol, not a single one. In fact, you were lucky if you ever received 6.0 Marshmallow on any of those, let alone 7.0 Nougat.

Anonymous, 24 Nov 2021It is not that simple. Iphone is a cult. Tons of people... moreWhile it's true that iPhones have a special status, if all phone manufacturers stopped releasing new phones, then we would have to buy the old ones like the S9. The price would have dropped by now and the phone is better than most midrangers in most specs apart from battery: SD 845, flagship camera with OIS and 4K video recording, Gorilla glass build, super-amoled HDR10 display, fast UFS 2.1 storage etc.).
Tech IS advancing at a fast pace (e.g. bigger battery capacities and faster charging standards), but I still think that phones could go for much longer than they currently do. Phone manufacturers make this hard, for example, by not selling replacement batteries. This forces one to use third party ones or more often than not, just buy a new phone to avoid the hustle of getting a new battery (at least for androids). Furthermore, with the current state Android OS, you aren't missing out on a lot of features by not getting the latest OS version e.g. android 12 apart from security updates which are of course very critical. Security updates still remain to be an issue.

Anonymous, 24 Nov 2021It is not that simple. Iphone is a cult. Tons of people... moreIt's only a cult because YOU say it is. It's not a cult if you can value actual support that spans beyond 5 years. Something Android users can't even grasp at all. Besides, no one even cares. You folks are all about specs specs specs and what price it has. It's the ONLY thing you look for. And now you're here preaching how Fairphone is blablabla because it gives Fairphone 2 users Android 10 after 6 years. Do you people even listen to yourselves?

Google had just 3 years of major. 5 years was only announced with Pixel 6. The rest of the industry mostly gets you just 2 years, in most cases just 1 year and even that with sporadic monthly security updates that aren't even released monthly. If it's Android 10 with all the security fixes implemented till today, then it's technically not an issue. Question is, is it really?

And it's not like I can't see the struggles they've been through (check the english wikipedia on fairphone for more) because there is just no driver support from qualcomm beyond 2 years (2021 chips onward 3 years) and as long as that doesn't change there is no hope for timely longterm support 😕 we should start blaming qualcomm way more for that because it's NOT the OEMs, it's not Google it's mostly QUALCOMMS FAULT! Without properly functioning drivers it's extremely complicated to get a new firmware running stable and doing that for an entire line-up of phones is expensive as f*ck
