Pixel 6a dummy confirms in-display fingerprint reader, no 3.5 mm headphone jack

07 December 2021
The new mid-range Pixel phone will look like the flagship 6-series and will probably share its chipset too - just not its camera sensors.

Eh. The removal of the headphone jack isn't terrible news, but I already know it'll cause problems for a lot of people.

Also, still having old sensors isn't the worst thing - previous A phones have been known for still taking brilliant pictures for the low price even with older sensors.

Oh it's to make the phone slimmer they said! It's to make the phone waterproof they said!

There are TONS of smartphone that still have 3.5mm jack that are considerably slim AND waterproof (for ex. Samsung A52 & A72).

It's just a business tactic to slightly reduce cost production & sell their own branded tws or bluetooth audio devices.

Also, a wired audio devices will have minimal latency & no delay whatsoever. Even with bluetooth 5.2 the delay is still noticeable.

The closest thing that could compare to a wired devices is, if you use a wireless 2.4 ghz dongle. But of course, people usually use that for a laptop/desktop pc. It would be so inconvenient to use that on a smartphone.

People here who supports 3.5 removal are paid promoter trying to get their shitty wireless product to sell.

I used to own the Pixel 4 XL and living without the headphone jack is beyond irritating, even with the adapter dongle. I traded it for the new 5a 5G and totally happy with it. Great to have my three year old studio headphone giving out a much better sound quality with the jack than using the dongle.

I'm glad that I have already bought the Pixel 5a 5G. If I haven't done that, then it would have been too late to get one and I have to buy this instead.

If it's going to have the old (much smaller) camera sensors, than why does it keep the giant camera hump that makes the phone more than 1 cm thick? That's just a beyond dumb, worst of both worlds, design.

Truth is, both wired and wireless have their use and abandoning one to "accelerate" other is sheer deception.
Tomorrow you'll justify usb-c removal to "accelerate wireless technology".

GAMIRSFM, 07 Dec 2021Here's the sad times now, no headphone jacks on midran... moreIn theory there's still time to reverse this if people come to senses and boycott phones without headphone jacks. But that's highly unlikely given today's mindset.

I really hope one can figure out a feasible method of fitting 3.5mm ports on phones that don't come with it. We can then purchase new phones and at least pay to get the 3.5mm port fitted. This will probably be the best way forward and more sustainable than opening a new company that manufactures phones with 3.5mm port. Just buy a phone cheap enough to not to care about warranty. Midrangers are already quite fast and there is little reason to go beyond that. If it gains traction then who knows, OEMs may start giving option to fit a port for a fee at buying stage?!

We could also start stockpiling phones with fast chips and headphone jacks before they go extinct. Laugh at it as much as you want but this could work for well beyond a decade. The reasoning is that:

                                        1. After few years when one phone is beyond repair we can use another from stockpile.
                                        2. Today's phones are quite fast and won't feel outdated for years to come. With each new generation, the performance gap with previous generation is getting very low. Dare I say in some cases older an generation thing may be preferable (e.g. 865/870 vs 888 with overheating problem).
