Oppo patents a phone with under-display camera, display on the back

17 December 2021
It could be the Find X4, but also could be just a patent with no real-life intentions.

Kaka, 19 Dec 2021But ud camera is better in privacy than camera in bezelNo, because :
1: You can EASILY cover the camera in the bezel, in fact, this is commonly done :
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08PKWFCMR
2: You can see the camera in the bezel, constantly remind you of its presence, while the underdisplay one, being hidden give a false sense of privacy as you quickly forget it is there, and like a false sense a security, a false sense of privacy is dangerous
3: There are many totally false myths about UDC and selfies camera making the matter worse, the main one are that "it can't see if the display is turned on", "there is a notification badge/icon when the camera is used", "applications can't bypass permissions", all of those are totally false.

I will be actively avoiding the under-display camera on my next phone. One of the reasons I chose Xperia 5.2 for my current phone was that the camera is in the bezel, where it's easy to cover with a sticker. Under-display camera is a privacy nightmare.

The display on the back is a welcome change however, and long overdue imo (why should I be forced to lay my phone on its back to receive notifications, especially since many camera modules are asymmetrical and make the phone wobble when on its back)

Anonymous, 18 Dec 2021 front camera is most important part in a phone.privacy is ... more1: Since when it is? That's the biggest BS I've ever read about the front camera, and I've read a lot.
The phone work perfectly fine without the front camera, and it is part of the reason why concepts like the Mi Mix Alpha were so popular, and despite what haters like to say, smartphones with pop up front camera were super popular too.

2: Yeah, another BS, there are MANY apps that don't trigger any notifications when the front camera is in use, from the camera app itself to most social apps.
There are also many apps that bypass permissions, in fact, that is yet another thing that make underdisplay camera dangerous, all those completely false myths.

3: Because you have no ideas what privacy is about.
That's funny how this is always someone hiding in an anonymous account who say those kinds of BSs.
Privacy can be about a lot of things, from preventing you to get blackmailed to literally preventing government from targeting ethnic minorities, and those two are directly related to front camera.
Having no privacy mean that as you post that I would know your name, age, date and location of birth, job and annual wage, what other things you said, even what adult video you watch, what you write to your crush, where you currently are.
And we are slowly but surely getting there, privacy skeptical idiots like you will be the first one to regret this.
Privacy is a known and legit way of preventing a government from turning into a dictatorship, and NO, your country isn't spared, if they could, they would.
It is also what protect whistleblowers, which are people putting themselves in danger, so some important truths can be known, such as, a dangerous substance found in your favorite snack, or your mother's favorite perfume being highly carcinogenic.

So, yeah, all that is MUCH MORE important than the selfish camera, who, as I explained, have better alternatives.

Anonymous, 18 Dec 2021Not many it's youOne sure thing, this kind of BS is the typical thing said by anonymous users.
It is rare to find a talk about video call without at least one person saying they don't care about it.
In fact, in real life, not on internet which is full of people already on social media, most I've talked about it with said they don't like video calls.
And since because of the covid the video calls have become a forced norm, fake cams have never been so popular.
                  But yeah, "just me".

Granted, it won't give you the best quality, but we talk about collecting data here, not about having a picture for instagram, it will still be better than many security camera footage.

Anonymous, 17 Dec 2021why would that be a good idea? imagine taking a video call ... moreCongratulation, you just described doing video call on a smartphone in general.
Video call on tablets and laptops make senses, even more on desktop, but on smartphone there are no points.
The goal here is to get rid of the annoying front camera, and many don't care about video calls and would gladly buy a phone that force you to make video calls through a small display.
So if you want to do video calls on a smartphone, obviously this concept (no front camera + display on the back) isn't for you.

Besides, having such a tiny display is stupid to begin with, phones like the Vivo Nex Dual Display :
                                https://www.gsmarena.com/vivo_nex_dual_display-9435.php
                                And the Nubia Z20 :
                                https://www.gsmarena.com/zte_nubia_z20-9780.php
Both have a big display on the back, though it may be "too big".
The ideal middle ground is what you'd find on the Motorola Razr :
                                https://www.gsmarena.com/motorola_razr_5g-pictures-10410.php#

You clearly don't need to see someone in a 20:9 aspect ratio, 4:3 like seen here is actually more than enough, except if you want to talk to Marge Simpson.
This way, you still have plenty of space for wireless charging and NFC on the back.
Of course, this mean to ugly stove camera design, but rather back to the better S10 camera layout, which was so much better anyway :
                                https://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s10-pictures-9536.php#
And which inspired the even better Meizu 17 and 17 Pro camera design :
                                https://www.gsmarena.com/meizu_17_pro-pictures-10232.php#

That's why it is a good idea.

                                  They must be Kidding themselves

Camera is a really well known privacy leak vector which can be used in a variety of way, including tracking individuals, including those in the background (not the phone owner/user) :
