It is time for another phone revolution

02 January 2022
The smartphone is dead! The bar form factor has reached its peak a while ago and now we've come to a standstill.

The evolution of the phone is to eliminate the phone itself and implant it into our brains.

6 inch and compact don't go together

Question is what's gonna be the purpose of the new form phone that's gonna be so radically different from what's currently available? A phone is now essentially a portable, computing, information and communication gadget.
The developmental transition you highlighted merely perfected the ergonomics and efficiency of that device for the most optimal performance of the above four purposes of the gadget.
For all the billions of regular Joe and Jane Publics that buy and change phones every day and keep the industry alive, they don't seem to need any much more from their phones. So back to the question, What is going to be the purpose of the new form phone that you wish for? It's still going to be a handheld device. You want it to be round or triangular or hexagonal in shape? You want it to be shatterproof or made to bounce on concrete? Yeah, that would be some innovation, I suppose but it's still going to end up delivering not much different from what is currently the peak requirement of the consumers from their devices which still remains to be a portable computing, information and communication device.
So in summary, I don't see the phone changing much more than what it's consumers presently require of it. Just my take.

Missing a trick instead of dual screens and folds. They need a slide out qwerty like the Nokia N97, E90 series that's what you need

Phones have become boring. I remember changing the phone in less than a year but now it is hardly after even almost two years. They are all the same now, a big and oversized, enormous slabs of glass, expensive and also very very fragile

Most of the breakthrough technology I try to imagine like space travel, time travel, and teleportation exist in science fiction movies. Even artificial intelligence seems dangerous after seeing Terminator and The Matrix even though we are closer to it. Phone technology is pretty primitive compared to tech we read in books and see in films.

I really don't see the practicality in rollables and tri-folds. A different form factor. Now what? Back to tapping on apps. Usage is the same. Android and iOS also both have very primitive OSes. Still the same static UI. My focus now is the content I like to add to it. Feel like hardware and software have plateaued. The changes are no longer meaningful.

I'm in agreement with many commentators: the bar-shaped smartphone has already reached its peak; it's now making incremental improvements. Here's what I'm looking for this coming year: major security developments and any new OS. HarmonyOS is apparently getting off to a slow start, and we need better ways to keep our phones more secure from hackings or crackings regardless of who or what is doing them.

next revolution is set to be solid state batteries and self-healing materials/bodies. The only thing missing beyond that is having phone software be standardized and updated indefinitely (as long as the hardware is supported, so closer to 10y than the current 2-5 year lifecycle).

Let’s first of all look back to look forward, devices like the IBM Simon and Apple Newton were all touch slabs, this form factor has for a long time been the pinnacle of simplicity, efficiency and usability with little to no moving parts and allowing manufacturers to fit bigger batteries and other equipment without much complication.

The slab has been the way to go since the early days and will continue to be the way to go for smartphones. Even though Foldables smartphones seem to be a new “trend” I am willing to bet that we will see the majority of the market stick to slabs unless Apple jump on the foldable trend, even then, much like in the 2000s slabs/bar phones were the way to go despite there being sliders and flips.

What you are looking for is a whole new thing, and who knows what that thing is. We may already be seeing that new thing, but haven’t realised it.

My personal belief is that we need some new technological building blocks to achieve a higher Technology Level Readiness (TLR) to be able to implement them in smartphone and bring new innovative functionalities

I am personnally happy with the current form factor but would welcome implementation of Non Volatile Memory (NVM) like MRAM to increase responsiveness, 60Ghz multi 10’s Gbits/s WiGig data wireless transmission to a display, wireless power up to 1m / 1,5m,… : those would open new usage scenario and be usefull.

6 inch screen, compact but durable. Snapdragon 870. 16gb ram. 1tb storage. 10,000 battery. Now that would be nice👍😉

Google glass was probably a step in that direction but proved too unpopular for society. Neuralink perhaps?
