A new breed of consumers conditioned to hand-holding by makers so they just bring their phones to service centers. They're helpless when something goes wrong with their stuff and they do not have a nerdy family member to run for help.
Not sure how Apple will perform stuff like reprogramming if there are no ports?
Or are they gonna normalize taking apart nearly-breakable phones, take out the motherboard and use a special device housed in pristine dust-free environments to do the equivalent of plugging a cable to a laptop and fixing the problem yourself?
I will not be surprised if that future comes.

Bodygard, 29 Dec 2021It's a gimmick only if you don't use/need it. For... moreIt IS a gimmick because water resistance is NOT what you think it is.

No one NEED an IP rating on their cellphone except professionals using phones like CAT that have to endure a heavy construction environment, and even them won't put those phones underwater.
IPx7 and IPx8 rating are NOT meant for :
*Things like smartphones in the first place.
      *Certifying something to OPERATE underwater.
      *Repeated exposures to liquids.
*Any other water than pure purified water.

So until a phone comes with a proper ATM rating, "water resistance" with IP67 and IP68 rated phones IS a gimmick, and there are absolutely no need for portless devices for that, nor portless devices will really improve how water-resistant phones are.
Mainly, once you realize that there are IPx8 rated phones with removable battery :
      https://www.gsmarena.com/results.php3?sIPCerts=6&idBatRemovable=1
And that none of the brand who consistently do put IP rating on their phones (none of the major brand) cover any type of liquid damages, either directly or considering that accidental fall (in liquids or not) aren't covered.

In fact, IP rating on smartphone is only a peace of mind that end up having the opposite effect, a perfect demonstration how a false sense of security is worse than no security, many think it mean waterproof, and the phone is totally immune to water, countless IPx7 and IPx8 phones have been lost because of that, there even was a lawsuit against Apple who showed the phone on pool in commercials.
That why, funnily enough, phones that had pop-up camera, which was criticized in part because it made IP rating "impossible/hard" (which is false) and vulnerable to water (also false), if you compare them by equal number to any IPx7 or IPx8 phone, you'll find MUCH MORE reports of the IP rated phone killed by liquids, because those having phones with a pop-up are careful and those with IP rated phones have "dangerous" conducts with them.

Also, the number of water related damaged/bricked phones is actually always underestimated, water damage can take months to manifest, and some who had July vacations and who took underwater photography won't realize it is why his phone in September is now dying, thinking it must be because of X or Y unrelated event.
IP x7 and x8 rating is far less useful than you think, and ANY phones, regardless of ports, can be made to be more than sufficiently protected enough against accidental and short immersion, spill and rain.
IP x3 to x6 on the other hand DO serve real purpose (rain).

In the end, we will just endup with totally portless phones for no added benefits and there WON'T be alternatives for those wanting them, exactly like there isn't any non Sony/gaming high end with a 3.5mm Jack available.

eSIMs are the obvious future. Sorry China, you're going to have to get in line or be the only place in the world that still forces people to use SIM Cards.

Above this price point, getting a huge sale would be hard for Sony.

Finally, something good that comes out of Apple! The SIM's were a bad idea to begin with! All phones should have at least 2 eSIM's, and the operators should make it much easier for people to active the eSIM's themselves (Verizon)!

I hope they remove screen too. It makes packaging bigger.

Graphene batteries need to come out already for more mainstream smartphones but OEMs don't want us to have longer-lasting batteries with 5X more charge cycles and super fast charging.

I'm watching closely what Elon Musk will do. A Tesla phone could change the game like Apple did nearly 15 years ago. Elon Musk is like a real-life Tony Stark. These companies got lazy. Tesla can inject life into it.

'Removing the physical SIM tray from a smartphone does have a couple of advantages from a manufacturing perspective. First, the mechanism to eject and insert a SIM tray would no longer need to be produced and its absence would free up some precious space on the inside. One less port would simplify production of the frame and removing the SIM tray would make a smartphone easier to keep water and dust out of the phone’s internals."

Every single time, media outlets are to blame for stating such false statements. There are like more than a dozen IP68 smartphones out there with a SIM Card Slot. This is utter bull*hit that goes up in the same trash bin as the excuses used to get rid of the 3.5 mm jack and the microsd card slot.

well if this happens, many carriers will need to work on adopting esim. The carrier I use doesn't support esims and if I want to use it, i need to move upto more premium carrier. Obviously multiplying the cost.
