Face ID works with a mask on iOS 15.4 Beta, no Apple Watch required – Face ID with glasses improved

28 January 2022
Wearing masks has caused Apple’s biometric solution to become more of a headache in the era of masking up.

Passive biometric is the future, you people need to stop forcing under display FPS seriously.

Anonymous, 28 Jan 2022You think that, based on your logic or your Apple fanboyism... moreFunny you say that, I was pedicting this exact thing will happen. When Apple didn't just instantly degrade sensitivity when COVID hit us all to allow face masks for FaceID, everyone was complaining how they can't be bothered to do that and allow unlocking with masks anyway, even if it degrades security. Now that they have allegedly done that, you all complain they've degraded security. One really can't satisfy you lot.

Also one will have to first check if security was actually degraded or not.

Finally! They can justify removing touch id after announcing three generations of iphones during face mask restrictions, at the moment some countries started to allow no masks.

      Slowpokes of tech world))

Sometimes Apple can do great things, but this isn't one of those. The only way to make a facial recognition system work with ephemeral features like glasses, masks, beards etc, is to increase tolerances and therefore make the system less secure. Such a technology can be either comfortable or secure, but not both at the same time. Apple should have gone for an under-display fingerprint scanner long ago and get done with it.

rizki1, 28 Jan 2022just open it using a pass code or pattern, how hard is it? ... moreYou can’t understand until you use it. Works so much better than fingerprint.

Partial Face-ID won't be as secure as Full Face-ID. Apple should just add In-Display fingerprint sensor in future models to make it more secure & convenient.

They're supposed to replace the notch with a punch hole anyway, so I would assume that's exactly what they intend to do.

Finally Apple found solution to the problem it created by... making the iPhone less secure. Does anyone really think that there is some Apple magic involved here? Clearly the update, in order to work, increases tolerances around the lower part of your face and tries to understand faces only by a narrow eye region. Which means everyone with eyes similar to you can unlock your phone. Which then creates a conundrum for people with sunglasses. I would feel very unsafe using FaceID for my transactions. FaceID is the least secure and most cumbersome biometric authentication, no matter how Apple tries to serve it. I'd take anyday a "moody" fingerprint scanner like the one of the Pixel 6, rather than the unsafe FaceID, which one time forces me to remove my mask, the other to remove the glasses, etc.

Anonymous, 28 Jan 2022Yeah the whole world is wearing mask now.. Now. Fingeprint scanners and cold countries exist since... checks notes... forever. It's funny people make big deal out of these 2 years yet dismiss fingerprint scanners being entirely useless with any kind of gloves for years and years.

A bit late, but since it doesn't look like this COVID s**t is going anywhere, a welcome addition. Since I have Apple Watch, unlocking with mask hasn't been an issue since iOS 14.5 I believe. It's interesting they mention glasses. I never had issues unlocking with glasses, even with sunglasses which are black and you'd expect it being unable to unlock, but it still did.
