If Apple opens iOS to other manufacturers, of course it would still be counted as one operating system. But it's restricted, which is fine, but you can't make up a different math model for counting marketshare. Either way, both operating systems offer different features for different needs. If you require simple stuff that works, you can get iOS. For everyone else, there's android.

Anonymous, 28 Jan 2022You have no idea how difficult it was to get rid of Google.... moreIt's always difficult to get out of some ecosystem once you relied on it. But most people are not heavily invested into these ecosystems. I have a Google account of course, but my Gmail exists only to be able to use Google and my android phone, I don't use it for e-mail at all, I have a different provider. I don't use any other service from Google than their search (and even that I use through samsung browser). For cloud purposes I have a lifetime pCloud so I don't have to worry about monthly payments. There aren't really good alternatives to YouTube, but I don't think I'd have any issues switching to iOS if I wanted to for some reason.

Anonymous, 28 Jan 2022its not through innovation its through locked in systems, p... moreYou have no idea how difficult it was to get rid of Google. People always say how you're locked to Apple's ecosystem and just entirely ignore how difficult it is to escape Google's ecosystem. Google Search, that was easy. Just switched to DuckDuckGo and that was that. Most difficult was GMail, because so much stuff was tied to it and I had to untie all of it. Also tons of stuff to check, forward and delete. Then there was Photos. You'll be surprised how difficult it was to delete stuff from it and I had to use script to do that because stupid controls it offers me just didn't work. And Youtube. I had to create a clicking script to wipe out comments without having to wipe entire account. People just aren't aware how deeply they are entrenched into Google's stuff and how hard it is to leave it. Because very few try to do that as they only know Google anyways.

Now that I'm "free", it's entirely different story. Despite using iPhone and Apple Watch and AirPods, I'm actually not tied to Apple's ecosystem at all. I use 3rd party services that aren't tied to either. But they are found on both ecosystems. And more, on Linux and Windows as well. Today, I'm on iOS, tomorrow I can be on Android. And all I need is like an hour of time to install all the apps from services I use and login to them. The time I needed to get to this point took months of planning and work to think things through, find good services that can replace Google's junk and migrate everything. But it was totally worth it as I'm not tied to anything. If Apple betrays my trust or I don't like something they do, migration elsewhere is just an hour away.

Nexus One, 28 Jan 2022iOS makes up 15% of the global market share but okay. So, how much of the global market is Samsung's own Android OneUI ? Or Oppo's ColorOS? Or OnePlus's OxygenOS? Or Huawei's HarmonyOS ? You can't just throw everything around as "Android". Well, you people do when you want to flash big market share numbers, but one Android is not like the other, where iOS is just iOS. One and only.

I'm saying that because various vendors treat their "interpretation" of Android very differently than others, they also have very different features and options and experience is also very different in the end as a result. Just having same apps and roughly same features frankly just isn't enough to call it the same.

This is just silly, people don’t leave Apple because Apple made so easy to stay in Apple ecosystem . With everything you get from Apple and their services it’s really hard to leave because no-one else can offer anything even close to that and Apple ecosystem just getting bigger and better all the time. That’s why their services added 165M new users last year.
