It's "aside from" optimizing software, they're also throwing in more cores. Why limit yourself if multiple avenues are becoming available. More tech doesn't always mean more waste. As technology advances, the price of technology decreases. In fact adding the four extra cores is meant to decrease your power consumption while increasing your device capability to do more (PRODUCTIVITY) than four cores can. That's how technology works. Would anyone be happy with 64KB of RAM today? That was "a lot" in the Apple II years. :)

Samsung is only better... moreI won't trust sony very much. i was in a call centre here in the philippines before with jvc account, and sony department was beside us and samsung camera customer care in our front. both jvc and sony accounts there supports all consumer products except for pro products. their agents told us sony's products aren't all that good. just like jvc, eventually these things suck in the end. they had more agents than jvc even though jvc is quite popular in US back in early 2000s. they have as many complaints as jvc account gets, and jvc had a lot especially that fiasco with the first hdtv lamps by panasonic which is made by matsushita. and sony spare parts are so damned expensive. better trust sharp. never bought a sony appliance after that.

If the S4 with many cores doesn't work well then we can brag about cores and optimization. Anyway, lets see what Samsung is capable of with their S4

So instead of optimizing the software which is better in the long run they're throwing in more cores to solve the lag and multi tasking issues? Then what happens when heavier apps and usage is applied? Add 8 more cores? A scaled down physX card? I mean I'm a die hard samsung user but this is just a short term solution.
The key is to limit what android can and cannot do(not as much as ios but u get what I mean), what it can run and what it has to close when it approachers slow performance. If samsung cant negotiate something with google then they should move out of that platform and start/use something else they have more control over(I hear Tizen is a candidate)

why do people worry so much when chip manufacturers add cores..these extra cores wont eat your more battery or cost you more..take gn2 for example, it has great battery life despite of powerful chipset and huge display..Its their way of making phone operation faster and smoother..Everyone has their own way of OS-hardware optimization.. Apple does it by making a good OS and iOS are made only for limited device which makes Apple easy to optimize..Other companies may do the same by adding cores and optimizing according to it. Iphone 5 is fast but GNote 2 is also equally fast. It doesn't matter if it has 2 cores more than iPhone because as end user, we are getting good battery life and value for money..iOS doesn't have many features as android has so it doesn't require that much CPU..
