"When the Mobile BRAVIA® Engine is running, a software layer is applied to the decoding step for images and video, where the Mobile BRAVIA® Engine processing is done in real-time."

it's worth pointing out, however, that the xperia z's showcased at CES 2013 were made in china. the "made in china" mark was prominent in the review videos posted on youtube. there may be some drawback here considering that many people are averse to made in china products. of course, i am aware that not everything china-made is bad.

Bravia engine is software, but IPS can not be batter then TFT becouse IPS is a variant of TFT. The same goes for PVA displays that are used in Sony mobile phones and TVs. Yes, PVA has worse viewing angles than IPs, but it has deeper blacks and better contrast. So it's not infirior technology, just diferent.

I own an older model of Xperia and i must say Sony puts an extra effort in order to make its smartphones' camera look dashing. Xperia Z is the next chapter in this book, but we have to wait and see how ZTE Grand S, announced at CES 2013, toughens the situation around Xperia Z with its 13MP rear camera. Read their all contrasting specs at http://www.etechmag.com/2013/01/11/comparison-grand-s-xperia-droid-dna-galaxy-note-2.html

I tend to agree some of the last comments:

stills quality lacks of details for a 13MP sensor, i doubt it's jpg compression since i have noticed that on Sony Exmor sensors (Xperia Ray, S3, Xperia T).

Imo, slow video continuous focus is not an advantage especially if you can't manually refocus. My friend's xperia T is often disappointing while recording videos.

Hopefully TFT is just some description mistake unless they added some new tech inside.

Bravia engine is pure software (i got a Xperia Ray with it), btw it's only for hype.

"From what we see, image sharpness is not ideal at 100% magnification but other than that, we definitely see improvement over last year's Xperia T. The noise levels are lower and the exposure metering seems correct."

Reason for the low sharpness: noise reduction and small lens.

Yes, the noise levels may be low, but take a look at one side effect of the noise reduction in the samples. Look at the trees in the first sample. Smeared like an impressionistic painting and not sharp at all.

This just like any other small pixel, small lens camera: you need a LOT of light to get acceptable results - or an optical image stabilization system(which increases the motion blur).
