Speaking from experience with working with analysts for my current company. My Marketing Director spends a lot of his time smooching up to analysts (for the services market not product though) in order to get them to write positive things about our company, also we submit them revenue data which they counter against us with data based on their own research and assumptions about the market. Plus product is much easier to measure vs. services revenue so I am pretty sure Apple is providing them with some kind of estimated data that is close to their actual for the Analysts to use as they see fit.
Though must admit some analysts will say a load of shit in order to their name (researcher name and company) into the news etc. Easy advertisement and market exposure is always useful ;)
Before I get called an Apple fanboy, I am actually a major Android fanboy! Own a Nexus 4 and never ever owned anything Apple :D

Be alert that it says SHIP units, NOT sales. Means that Apple could produce a lot, and most of the phones are in stock of mobile carriers or even on apple stores. This is a tricky number that do not reflect REAL sales, it is just manufacturer quantities distributed among apple commercial channel. Real sales aprox could be half 30 milliones, which is average iphone sales. Do not confuse SHIPPED units with SALES.

See icon of what you want to do, press. Get out, press the one button. What battery? Dunno, it just goes. Very simple. Who cares if what processor it has or how RAM is working, right? We got 4 new icon spaces. Yay.
