Just Me, 16 Mar 2022Okay, I agree with you, I also have Note 20 ultra and think... moreIMO 3" wide is about the viable limit for a phone if the manufacturer wants it to sell. Anything wider and more than half the population (i.e. potential buyers) wouldn't even consider it. Anyone with small hands (women, Asains, etc. ?) wouldn't be able to comfortably and confidently hold a phone wider than 3". Studies have shown that most people find ~70mm to be a comfortable width to hold and that means that's your sweet spot for maximizing potential sales. That ~70mm width equates to a roughly 6.1" screen (think standard iPhone or Samsung S series). So the mass market isn't there for a device that's wider than say 73mm, and your drawing is 85mm wide - way too big.
I think the only solution to a phone with a large screen is to increase screen-to-body ratio (which is already >90% in a lot of cases, so not much room for improvement there) or, to have the small format be less than half - in other words have it mutli-fold or roll up. Heck, have 3 seams (folding like a "W" or "M") so that the height remains the same but the width folds down to 1/4th it's unfolded size. Obviously that'd add thickness, but at least there's room for future improvement in that dimension. A 70mm wide device then could have an overall width of 280mm. Of course there's a limit to device height usability too, so I think you'd be looking at a device with more of a 2:1 aspect ratio (280x140) which would put the height around the standard iPhone/Samsung.
As for a 4:3 aspect, usage would dictate if that's a desirable ratio or not. IMO 4:3 is great for general web surfing and even a lot of (handheld) casual games (candy crush, sudoku, etc.). It's not good though for movie watching, dual application, immersive gaming, etc.
So who's the customer and what are they using it for? Your hypothetical 4:3 folding 8" screen phone isn't really great for business users (who'd want a different aspect ratio for dual apps or a larger screen for actual work or client presentations). It's also not great for movie watching (because the aspect ratio is so off from movie standards that it's really just wasted space). Hardcore gamers wouldn't benefit from this device, and they'd more than likely want a larger screen size so that it's a more immersive experience.
About the only people I see benefiting from this device's specs are the casual gamers, where the 4:3 aspect ratio works fine. Problem though is that for those types of games the current crop of devices works fine as-is and there's no real benefit to additional screen real estate. Also, this device is a 2-handed affair, so again I struggle to see the market for it.
Maybe it could be the perfect device for a few people, but not enough to warrant actually making it.

But look the quick scetch I made, and I'm thinking that this is the best variant for foldable smatphone, still a bit wide but compensate with shortness and still be quite usable onehanded. And 4:3 is still better than every foldable now, since they are quite more square and there fore more unusable for consuming media.

Just me, 15 Mar 2022Why not, square has 1:1 sides so 2 squares side by side are... moreTo have an 8" diagonal screen unfolded, at a 16:9 aspect ratio, the phone would be 4"x7" unfolded (101.6mm X 177.8mm). I have the Note 20 Ultra and it's nowhere near that wide, nor would most people want a 4" wide screen as it'd be completely unruly in-hand. The Note 20 Ultra is 3" wide, and a lot of people find it too large to use comfortably. And then there's the whole pocketablity factor. As a man I find the Note to fit fine in my pants pockets, but it's probably about the limit of size that I'd want (probably could go up to 3.25" wide, but then that makes one handed operation harder). The only way to make the screen larger yet maintain usability is to keep the same overall dimensions and shrink the bezels, therefore increasing the screen to body ratio. Problem with that is that the bezels are already pretty much gone (91.7% screen-to-body ratio on the Note 20 Ultra).
It sounds like what you want is a tablet that folds, which is fine, but unless it folds into thirds or rolls up or something, it's still going to be too big to be user pocket friendly. And if that's the case, then why would anyone want an 8" display and not a 12"? Or 16"? Heck, an 8" display (non-16:9) that folds would be essentially the size of a standard paperback book. Not exactly pocketable but certainly easy to carry.
You could shoot for a 7" diagonal at a 16:9 aspect, which means it'd be 3"x6". So essentially a shorter version of the Note or a slightly larger Samsung Z Flip3.
I bought the Note because I wanted the largest screen phone so that I wouldn't have to bring my tablet with me. If I want a larger screen then I bring my laptop (or you could bring a tablet, but not in your pocket).

Meanwhile, the Mate X was still scheduled to be released around the same time. The Mate X had the opportunity to be at the forefront of this form factor without any competition from Samsung for 5 months. That was Huawei's time to lead. It couldn't have worked out any better for them.
Yet Huawei didn't release the Mate X until December with little to no marketing. Why? Because it wasn't a finished product. It was a concept. Outer foldables proved to be even less reliable than inner foldables. That's why they went back to the drawing board and made the X2 in the likeness of the Fold. Nobody forced Huawei's hand on this. You're re-imagining history.

Mate X was thin, but obviously with a design which could not work. This is the reason why Huawei switched to Samsung design. This had nothing to do with sanctions.

Let's just hope that it is not a Samsung fold clone. Samsung fold really blows at what it set out to do.
What we need is something fresh and new. Basically something like the Mate X series but for worldwide audience. I.e. full fledged (flagship) camera, phone sized when folded ((the original mate x was just 10mm thickness) with phone like aspect ratio, i.e. a full flagship when folded + a real tablet when unfolded (8inch screen minimum, preferably 8.4inch ++)
It can be done, Mate X is a 3 year olds technology and was almost there. Then Samsung made massive steps back and brought us to the stone age of foldables, Huawei got banned in the anti-free trade world we live in and everybody else gave up.
The tech is certainly here, all we need is someone with the b*lls to not make a Samsung fold clone (which is terrible), but instead continue from where Huawei left it off in 2018-2019...
