If they decide to take on Foldables, it will be just as modern as anything available. I already see Apple having an advantage getting more stamina out of a smaller battery. That is a problem for both the Flip and Fold.
That also means Apple can design a slimmer Foldable.

Samsung still has ways to go. From a design standpoint, the Flip is fine. The Fold still needs more refinement.

mayga1, 16 Mar 2022Slab phones are dead in a a couple of years."Couple years"? Lol it's only dead when apple decides to get in the game. But trust me "couple years" won't kill the most popular form factor currently being sold. PS do you know what a couple means?

My fold 3 is still the least used smartphone I currently have. Thank goodness I didn't pay full price for it.

Anonymous, 16 Mar 2022No they are not. Not everyone wants to keep unfolding phone... moreEverybody wants bigger screen as long as it is pocketable. Phone screens remain tiny. Only issue with current designs is that when folded they are huge and bad to us. Also when unfolded they are the wrong aspect ratio.

A trip fold that is only 9mm when folded and book sized when unfolded is obviously the future that will kill slab phones. We are just a decade away for that.

And also you are right, people hate unfolding of they do not need to. And often they won't, merely use their filing phone as a slab phone which would only unfold when really needed.

There are great many downsides to the slab design. There are zero downsides to folding other than its current infeasibility (we merely don't yet have the tech).

But yeah, slabs will die, as the dumb phones also did.

              People hate tiny screens.

mayga1, 16 Mar 2022Slab phones are dead in a a couple of years. No they are not. Not everyone wants to keep unfolding phones. If that was the case, when we had flip phones, regular ones would disappear entirely. Yet they are still around where flip (dumb) phones are actually very rare. Touch folding phones probably won't go away, but they'll never be the mainstream. Not everyone wants to unfold them every time they want to use them and most don't need that big screens which are in wrong format anyway. Having wide video on regular touch or on folding is almost the same size in the end, you just have tons of black above and below video. So, basically useless for any content consumption but web browsing and even there webpages have certain prefered shape.

mayga1, 16 Mar 2022Slab phones are dead in a a couple of years.Slab phones won’t die in many years if ever because it is best form factor and most user friendly. People use their phones so much these days that they don’t want to flip them open to use them all the time. Also fli phones have really big disadvantages and i’m not sure if they are fixable. Flip phones will stay niche for many years and i’m not sure if they ever going to really take off, i just don’t see why people would buy them i mean masses.

Samsung orders panels for their future foldables from... Samsung. Which is itself, but a different one.

It's time to get the dust off my Sharp GX25 Ferrari edition and rock it retro style 😄

Anonymous, 16 Mar 2022Ohh my.. flip phone is making a comeback!! 👏🏻👏🏻Let's not pretend slab phones were the form factor of choice. We only got slab phones because we wanted touch screens. Then the screens got bigger and bigger for improved reading, gaming, video etc. We couldn't do none of that stuff with a tiny 2" screen of a flip phone so we had no choice. We all hated the open face slab when it first came out because of its open face that's prone to scratches, breaks, and other damages. The slab couldn't fold until now. You're welcome.

It will still be more expensive and less capable that candy bar phones. Annoying the fact that you need to flip it so often. Cool design and idea though.
