The included hardware sounds like Apple intended something like the Samsung Smart Monitor series and then remembered that not many normal customers will buy a 1700-2200 Euro monitor.

In theory they could run as standalone ... But will Apple allow it?
No.. it will eat up their other market segments..
The more you own apple devices, the better for them.
