2024 iPhones will have UD selfie camera and Face ID, analyst predicts

20 April 2022
The notch will finally be gone.

[deleted post]shot eh? There's a chance you may be taking this stuff a little too seriously.

It’s sad that Android OEMs don’t give enough support for this technology. I was expecting 2021 to be the year if the under-display frontal camera, but they decided to stick to the classic punch hole and water drop notch.

Sure the photo image quality is not the best, but I believe it is fully worth it to get a true fullscreen display. It is a very easy compromise, but we don’t have enough choices of phone models, unfortunately.

And I never said anyone was dumb for buying Android devices simply for featuring new and wacky ideas, I did my own share of that. But my days of forking out 100’s or even 1000+ pounds for something simply because it features some impressive sounding, but unproven tech feature are over.

I’m not as young as I once was, and now just want stuff that works without hassle, so again I’m quite willing for things like folding screens, under display cameras and biometrics to go through the training wheels on Android, then when they are at a point where they offer benefit without compromise, I’m happy to have them on an Apple device.

And yes Apple, like any tech brand over use the term ‘innovation’ that I agree with, to the point where the word has practically lost all meaning. I’ve also done my own share of eye rolling whilst watching Apple keynotes. Still their products do work for me, so I continue to be a customer.

atichko, 21 Apr 2022Sure, Apple will have it all...10 years after everyone else... more"Apple always claim to be an innovative company "

This is just inside Android boys head, it's them who keep bringing this up over and over again. Apple uses word innovative very rarely.

DaFink, 21 Apr 2022What is this obsession with being first all the time. Apple... moreI would totally agree with you if Apple didn't shout out loud that it is the most innovative company out there and that is the only thing that bothers me as they are not. Sure they can be praised for the actual effort they make to steal an idea and make what it should have been from the start. I would like to them actually create something that has not been done elsewhere and that has the same level of polish they give for stuff they "borrowed". Sure, as you say, praise us, dumb people, who willingly buy products that have brilliant solutions on paper but suck partially or big time in user experience just because these silly companies want to monetise their "idea" as quickly as possible instead of making sure it's well passed the "beta" stage".

I hope they don’t put the camera and Face ID under the display. It’s just gonna make it worse. I don’t see why so many people obsess about the notch. It’s not even an issue, grow up! Even the current rumours about a pill + hole punch looks worse than a nice symmetrical notch. Just leave it and focus on other, more tangible upgrades.

DaFink, 21 Apr 2022What is this obsession with being first all the time. Apple... moreVery correct.

People generally think that Apple is the first company for many tech innovation which it seems but it isn't.

Apple does the best implementation above all even if they are the last one to implement something.

It follows the three principles, of releasing a feature/ product/ service/ software only if:

                    1. It works
                    2. It is efficient and simple
                    3. It looks good

And while on other OS the feature might not work everytime and also maybe not as expected. Or it might work very well standalone but not integrated cohesiveness like Apple.

They might not be efficient or simple. Unnecessary changes for the sake of it.

They don't look good or only a part of it looks good not all.

But now over time Google has done an incredible job as well.
Their pixel software is something unmatched within Android either be it consistency in design or the overall user experience and the camera software is just at another level.

But other manufacturers paint Android in their own way like miui etc. They have a lots of feature (with bugs). Unnecessary splitting of settings and options (just for the sake of change). And is it efficient (can't say). They can't compete with pixel on a same hardware level.

Windows on the other hand has also started consistent design with windows 11 but it is a work in progress.

But Apple, they are the ones which are already there where Microsoft and Google will be in terms of cohesive experience with in their product/services lineup. (They have already surpassed Apple in some categories, but again it counts as a whole not just few).

Apple implemented their policy from the very beginning : " we don't ship junk".

Other's have shipped junk and earn and then use that money to make a better product. But that junk they shipped also helped in making the image they have now and so the brand value.

atichko, 21 Apr 2022Sure, Apple will have it all...10 years after everyone else... moreWhat is this obsession with being first all the time. Apple didn’t have the first biometric unlock system, Motorola did on the Atrix, and it sucked. It sucked so bad that nobody bothered to follow suit. Only when Apple introduced Touch ID did the industry take notice and join in.

Apple will not be the first with UD cameras either, but so far all those that do have ud cameras,, guess what, they suck. Same goes for the early under display finger print readers, nobody is going to honestly claim they were an improvement over the capacitive sensors they were replacing cause they weren’t. They were neither as fast nor as reliable as the older capacitive type. Even now several generations in they are just about getting there.

But back then they were new something, something ‘iPhone doesn’t have’ so never mind they weren’t actually all that good, just say yippee and all that…..

So look, if you always want the first spec feature, even if it is underwhelming and temperamental in its performance, then Android is the way to go for sure. If you just don’t care about the ‘but we had it first’ line and only want new features when you know they are going to offer an improvement over what they replace, then Apple does seem a safe bet more often than not.

And no this is not a knock on Android itself, oem’s in the Android space have to compete not only with Apple, but each other as well. So the pressure to differentiate on a hardware level is orders of magnitude higher than Apple, who have the luxury of knowing that if somebody wants an iOS device, the it’s Apple or nothing. Thus they can afford to take their time and make sure new hardware features are properly implemented.

So if anyone from Apple is reading this (not likely I know) then I don’t care when you put UD cameras into an iPhone, am quite happy for the Android faithful to be the beta testers for this stuff, just put it in when it works as well or better than what we have now.
