notafanboy, 05 May 2022Is the IMX766 a good sensor? From what I read, it's be... moreIt's a good sensor but not a really top level one. It is being used in a lot of OPPO/Oneplus/Realme phones but generally not in midrangers from other companies (a customized version is used on some of Vivo's x series but they are quite expensive phones too). Xiaomi uses it in their Xiaomi 12 but gives worse sensors in their midrangers (the imx766 is certainly a better sensor than something like the hm2 which is used on so many midrangers from all companies). However, the end result of course depends a lot on the optimisation as well. Oppo also uses this on the Find x5 and Find x5 Pro but with better lenses than the midrangers and with their own marisilicon x as well so the results are likely to be different from their midrangers using the same sensor. Honor is also using fusion tech to fuse the images from different sensors. They claim this gives better results (whether it actually does or not remains to be seen). Anyway, definitely a pretty good sensor but not as good as sensors like the imx700 or gn2 or Sony's upcoming new flagship sensors

notafanboy, 05 May 2022Is the IMX766 a good sensor? From what I read, it's be... moreI agree here. The sensor itself is the issue here. It's simply small for a camera-centric phone. Honestly, Honor's strategy here is wrong. I would personally want upgrades on the ultrawide and telephoto cameras as I upgrade, not the main camera.

That'd why I liked Huawei's flagships. You get the best zoom and phone peripherals by upgrading, but the main camera was always the same. In this sense, the IMX766 is the Achilles heel for the Magic4 Pro. It'll be okay, but it will never be able to match the IMX700s and the Magic4 Ultimate. (On that note, OIS should have been fitted due to the smallish sensor. Thonk moment)

notafanboy, 05 May 2022Mmhh, they took too long in my opinion. Also why tf doesn&#... moreIn a trick learned from Huawei, Honor is going down a new camera evolution.

They're probably going to ditch the OIS and allocate the free space to accommodate larger sensors. And they'll compensate for the lack of OIS by using a wider focal length. Huawei's 2020 flagships went for 23mm lenses instead of the 2019 flagship's 27mm lenses.

It seems like they got away with it; the Mate 40 Pro managed to keep up with the P40 Pro, despite OIS being stripped away from it.

Also, that reminds me. My P30 Pro's screen broke, so I sent it in for repairs and got a Nova 5T as a temporary replacement. I had to nurse it a bit in the dark, but it managed to save a decent shot despite no OIS. The same goes for video; EIS is enough.

Honor is clearly confident about this. And frankly, after using the Nova 5T for a week, I forgot about the lack of OIS. I was only reminded until I got my P30 Pro back, and used the 5x again.

Mmhh, they took too long in my opinion. Also why tf doesn't the Magic 4 Pro have OIS on the main camera??
