The purpose of analog pixel binning is having less read noise than in the high resolution mode. The Event Horizon telescope combined multiple telescopes due to diffraction.

Whackcar, 10 May 2022You wouldn't really need it. I bet Samsung will use 16... moreso all phone camera sensors use 12MP?? my life is a lie !!! can't believe some phone companies use that for marketing point

This is a crazy. Samsung is out of their mind. Pixel bining doesn't give that much advantage towards noise reduction as much as bigger sensor. 200MP will be too hard for the hardware. 1" sensor is the solition.

Awesome news, Samsung is the best

Anonymous, 10 May 2022My god, I want this. Time to start saving for the 1TB version. You wouldn't really need it. I bet Samsung will use 16-1 binning for the 200MP camera, so you'll end up with 12.5MP images again. I'm not even kidding.

yalim, 10 May 2022there was no quality difference between 12MP and 108MP. why... moreThat's because Samsung uses 9-1 binning sensors, so 108/9 = 12. You end up with NO improvement in detail capture in daylight (which is like 80% of photographing scenerios). The only improvement you get are in low-light/night shots, which are easily be achieved by other brands by using advanced image-stacking algorithms like night-sight/night-mode/etc.

In the end, Samsung stays behind in cameras because they make stupid decisions. While Pixel/Huawei/etc lead the race.

The same principle used as when they took that first photo of a black hole a few years ago using the Event Horizon Telescope. That "telescope" is in fact a bunch of telescopes spread across the entire planet, all the way down to Antarctica. Join multiple sources into one pixel to rule out the distortions and you'll see things no one else can see. The end result for the 108MP Samsung sensor is also pretty obvious, there is no smartphone getting close to what you can achieve with an S22U, if you use the camera right: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sCUHNk3nUjo

Fun nerd fact, the Event Horizon Telescope scientists are supposedly going to release the first image of Sagittarius A* on Thursday. The super massive black hole at the centre of our galaxy.
