SShock, 16 May 2022I honestly don't understand why companies started doin... moreIt really depends what content you're watching. If it's TV series, these are likely 16:9 as this is the current TV standard, but if its films it's 21:9 which is the cinema standard. I prefer 21:9, excellent for watching films, makes the phone narrow, easy to hold, no issue with scrolling, etc. I'm using the mark II, and just ordered mark IV. Let's be honest, wide aspect ratio is the future. Technology is not going back to 4:3 or even 16:9. Some TV series started adopting wider aspect ratios than 16:9.

I'm seriously considering replacing my long serving gallant Xperia S with the Sony Xperia 1 IV. I really like this gadget from Sony.

noidea, 18 May 2022I like Sony's phones mainly because of the screens. No... moremy man!

As much as I love the Sony Xperia 1 IV, you can currently buy an S22 Ultra 1TB for $250 cheaper in the USA, or the 512GB option for $450 cheaper, or the 256GB option for $550 cheaper. That's enough to probably sway me the other way (if I had money to spend on phones lol, I stick to budget devices because they're good enough and I need to save up for real estate). The previous Sony flagships were much closer to Samsung in price in the USA. If price is no object then I would get this.

I like Sony's phones mainly because of the screens. No notches, rounded corners or edges. No trendy frills, as it should be.

My only nitpick is screen resolution. They didn't define 21:9 as 64:27, the only logical definition.

In the case of the 10 series, 2520 × 1080 makes no sense. The 64:27 variant of 1080p is 2560 × 1080. In the 1 series, there are 24 extra lines of pixels that deviate it fron being truly 21:9.

I was hoping they'd fix this for this year's line, but no. Maybe next year. Or never...

I need to replace my current (Sony / Sony Ericsson) phone and I want a headphone jack + good strong glass + small form + battery charging speed that keeps batteries alive for years + as a bonus, lots of memory, and this Sony 10 IV has all that. However, I really use the FM radio in my phone quite a lot too, so I want my next phone to have one. They've removed that in the 10 IV, so I'll have to go for the Sony 10 III and forego some of the memory, battery, and have Gorilla 6 instead of Victus. Is the radio really not there or is it just not enabled by default?

I would totally buy the 1 IV right now... if it didn't cost $2000. Seriously, that's double my monthly rent, and I don't think any smartphone is worth that much, even if it was absolutely perfect with no flaws whatsoever. The 10 IV does look interesting, but the SoC isn't very good, and I'm a bit concerned about its DSP (no 4K video? Really?)

What's even more odd on Sony devices is the fact that they are also marketed as external professional displays for your SONY alpha series cameras. But every FullFrame camera can only output video in 16:9 and stills in 3:2 or 4:3. And because of that, there is hardly any content on youtube shot in 21:9. So I do really not understand why the hell they chose a 21:9 aspect ratio.

I will be buying the 1 IV this year, but I agree it's not a clear winner.

Pros to me is the 21:9 (I am done with wide phones), the updated battery, camera quality and the alpha zoom, camera shutter button (it is the MOST CONVENIENT THING, wish Sony made competitive flagships more often), SDcard slot.

Cons are: 4k screen =battery wasted, 120hz continuously =battery wasted, 12mpx barely ok in my book. Release time is pushing it.

Let Google take care of the software updates and camera postprocessing, while Sony designs the hardware. Maybe also collaborate on the gaming front, game streaming etc.

It should be a match made in heaven. Sony's Android skin is already very similar to stock Android, and many Sony apps have been discontinued over the years and replaced by Google ones e.g. keyboard, photo album.

Sony takes a long time to sell its phones, therefore it is irrelevant in the competition with the big boys.

All Xperia phones need is 1) worldwide availability within a month after announcement, and 2) Proper auto night mode, on par with the Pixel phones,
