iPhone 8 and later are getting iOS 16, support for iPhone 6s, 7 and SE dropped

07 June 2022
iPadOS 16 also drops some old devices - very old, e.g. the iPad Air 2 from 2014. watchOS 9 requires iOS 16, so that may cause some issues if you have an old phone.

Look at its predecessor the Iphone 6.. it's support ended at ios 12.. by the logic iphone 6s should have stopped at ios 13.. but it went on with 14.. and now 15

It’s the fact that it has received less overall support that it’s immediate predecessors that that people confused. Their doesn’t appear to be any valid reason it is not getting iOS 16, which would bring it in line with the support term the 6S and original SE had.

Anonymous, 07 Jun 2022Of course the 7 outlasted the competition by a huge margin.... moreAnd no matter how many features it brings or how stable it is, I will probably remember this with a bad taste in the future because it killed the iPhone 7 (that I used for 5 years, don’t use anymore) with the 6s, essentially saying that they are about the same phone, even though Apple themselves praised the 7 as a huge step forward with a new design and completely new chip and water resistance, much better camera and all of that.

The perfect iOS update in my opinion was iOS 12. It was better than any iOS 11 version from day one in terms of bugs, performance and battery, it brought useful features like screen time, and it didn’t drop support for any device.

Of course the 7 outlasted the competition by a huge margin. I‘m still a bit bummed that it only got the same amount of software updates as the iPhone 5s, especially since the iPads still go all the way back to A9.
There was another one of some live caption Accessibility feature which only works on iPads with A12 Bionic or iPhones with A13 Bionic.
I don’t get what Apple is doing with the iPhones this year. It‘s true that most will probably upgrade their iPhone more frequently than their iPad but if they got it up and running on those iPad, might as well just port it over to the iPhones for bragging rights in longevity 🤷‍♂️

It even exceeds typical Apple's 5 years of major updates. And even now, it'll continue to get security updates for 2-3 more years and will be entirely discontinued after 10 years. This is how a typical iPhone support goes. I'd say it's not short lived but best in industry...

RIP iPhone 6S & iPhone 6S Plus, iPhone SE, the last iPhones with a headphone jack. Also RIP iPod. With that, the headphone jack era of iPhone is sealed eternally away from the future generations.

DMX, 07 Jun 2022Everyone complaining that the iPhone 7, a phone from 2016, ... moreTrue that, my xperia Xz2 from 2018 was dumped in 2021 🥲

Using my original iPhone SE yesterday, I'm fine not getting any more support because iOS15 destroyed my SE1's battery life. Not that iOS14 was great on it but 15 destroyed it. I had to restore everything to new again and battery life is better and some of the glitches went away but not completely.

The best battery life was when it was still on iOS10. But it's harder to stay on that because you lose so much app compatibility. Updating software is so overrated. I wish my MacBook Air went back to El Capitan and not be on Monterey. Just takes up more space. People whine about wanting more software support. Then turn around and complain how the update ruined their device.

Sad the 1st gen SE won't get 16, but the phone is super cool and am buying it.

                                    Doesn’t matter that much.
Most or all apps will probably run on those devices for years and if a security hole gets discovered, Apple will probably launch an update for them to resolve it.

Anonymous, 07 Jun 2022the 7’s probably one of the shortest lived (in terms of sof... moreYeah not sure what Apple is thinking there, at first I thought it was down do iOS requiring an A11 or later, maybe because of the presence of a neural engine or the performance controller being capable of accessing all cores simultaneously, only two could be active at any given time on the A10.

But then it was pointed out to me that some of the older model iPads rocking the A9 are getting iPad OS16, which for all intents and purposes is iOS 16 anyway.

So again this is strange one, and not really fair to the 7 series, which are still pretty decent devices, especially the Plus.
