SShock, 15 Jun 2022Are you REALLY going to pull the semantics argument here? R... moreUtter BS, between a little denoise and sharpening like DSLR/SLR and old pocket cams do and the recent trend of overprocessed HDR-image stacking and bracketing with "AI" guesswork for detail enhancement and fake dynamic range, oversharpening and denoising to the point it looks like some gum and artificial, just to make some small sensor image more appealing to the clueless public than the other phone with the same small sensor with more laid back processing IS quite the difference.
Also, there are quite a few midrangers who offer RAW image export, the already 2+ years old Realme 6 Pro as an example, works nicely for capturing milky way long exposures btw.

Regarding control of the processing for the end user: with gcam you have (to a certain point at least). Also, in some DSLRs you can set the amount of sharpening and so on, or even more with magic lantern.

SShock, 15 Jun 2022You clearly have no idea how cameras even work. The moment ... moreNo shit sherlock, I talked about the misuse of the word photography by auto-mode and computational photography shooters.. The more fake processing is invovled, the less it has anything to do with real photography. Amd btw how a camera works is not rocketscience.

blue, 15 Jun 2022Every camera snaps a RAW image, that's just pure data ... moreAre you REALLY going to pull the semantics argument here? Really? No s**t, of course sensors capture in RAW, it's a dumb sensor, it just captures light photons and doesn't know to do anything else. Everything that happens AFTER that is ALWAYS computational photography and has been for ages dating back to dumb phones with cameras. Especially because sensors and lenses are tiny you need to clean things up, at very least perform denoising and sharpening to create visually appealing image for general consumer, everyone prefers smooth images over grainy ones. And after you perform denoising, photos usually feel blurry so they apply sharpening. None of cheap phones offer RAW export and neither do most expensive ones, it's the last trend of "Pro" devices to give you RAW export that you can actually take and use. But it's an optional thing hardly anyone uses. For rest it's always fully automated processing over which you have zero control. So stop trying to sound smart by twisting words and pretending I don't know anything and you're some sort of genius.

SShock, 15 Jun 2022You clearly have no idea how cameras even work. The moment ... moreEvery camera snaps a RAW image, that's just pure data from the sensor. Even the cheapest camera in the cheapest phone captures raw image data. Only some phones allow you to work with the raw data.
If you don't know anything about it, why do you still keep being so agressive in the discussions?

I have an unlocked Note20 Ultra and it says it's "up to date" with the last update from May 1. I guess this update is just for locked phones (though I don't know why).

The moment it has to save as JPG or HEIC, it has already done tons of processing just to create the image file. This isn't DSLR camera that snaps a RAW image...

Google proved many times how computational processing of image does more to quality than just throwing idiotic sensors and fancy branded lenses. So much so that others started copying it and even developing dedicated image processing chips like MariSilicon with Oppos.

I love upgrading my stuff (either hardware or software) even if I know it wont always be the latest and greatest!

I'm still on August firmware, fresh out off box with nothing, no throttling, but heats up, also battery everything is stellar.

Why update when it ain't broken
