The new periscope module on the 1 IV is only slightly larger than that of the 1 III. Other parts still need work, however, especially the cooling.

      I wonder how many specifications Sony is lying about on this one. I'm still waiting for my Xperia 1 III to have its advertised 5G bands working. Sony forced all the SA 5G bands into NSA mode, effectively eliminating them. People have been saying that all the 1 III phones have NR 77 entirely disabled, counter to the specifications.

Headphone jacks on a phone just contribute more to e-waste. You can just buy one USB-C DAC to use on 10 generations of phones instead of 10 headphone jacks for 10 different phones.

          PRO-I still uses 1 type sensor and image quality output shows it compared to other small sensors found on other phone. It's also not cropped to 12mp either, it's cropped to around 14mp but photo uses only 12mp while video uses whole physical crop. In order for them to use the whole 20mp area they would need to go to either Ultrawide focal length or make camera housing protrude a lot more than it protrudes right now. It's a compromise between aesthetics and image quality and it works.

          Not sure what you meant by color accuracy, it's a pretty color accurate display that track gamma with brightness quite properly. 1 IV has higher sustained brightness than S22 Ultra while keeping the color accuracy. You need to put S22 Ultra in Extra Bright mode in order to achieve higher sustained brightness but I'm not sure how that impacts color accuracy. Creator Mode is typical Sony picture profile stuff for movies which is always warmer. Sony does that across most of it's video equipment they just call it differently.

          21:9 4K found on Xperia has been officially certified as 4K so there is no discussion about that anymore. We can discuss how pentile OLED is a resolution "scam" compared to LCD and TV OLED pixel array but that's a discussion for another day.

          Xperia Android gets 3 years of update but only two upgrades. So there is that.

It's probably a Frankenstein sensor made out of few existing components. Considering this thing can shoot 20fps in both standard and HDR in full res it's not a QB sensor. Not saying that it cannot be done with QB sensor but I doubt Xperia team has implemented A7S III tricks just for telephoto. Supposedly next year when all 1 V sensors go iPhone 14 route the QB will play a big role. Supposedly.

              They bragged about 1 II having a 12MP telephoto cam, but they were cropping the center portion of a 20MP sensor to achieve that effect, so the utilized sensor area was smaller than what was written on a spec sheet; false advertisement. Not 'misreporting', but plain lying.

              They also misled consumer by saying Pro-I uses a type 1 sensor, even though the lens covered only center 12MP of it. Sony has a weird tendency to crop a 20MP sensor just to take a 12MP photo LOL.

              Sample photos shown on Xperia 10 IV product page were evidently taken by a dedicated camera. Food and portrait photos have an unreal amount of natural background bokeh which would not have been possible using a smartphone camera.

              Sony was always focusing on gimmicks than anybody else. Dynamic Vibration System, non-4K 'Cinemawide 4K' display, Creator Display Mode that fails to deliver the promised color accuracy on Notebookcheck's testing et cetera. At the same time they always ignored the essentials, though; Xperia had awful speakers before 1 III, a terribly calibrated display and a poor camera before 1 II, no OIS before the OG 1, poorly featured manual mode before XZ1, plastic frame that cracked easily before XZ Premium, and the list goes on and on and on. It is only recent that Sony finally started producing a half decent product.

              Xperia I IV owners who paid 1400 euros for their phones owners will be now enjoying 2 years of OS updates, meanwhile all Samsung, Vivo, Oppo, OnePlus, Xiaomi and Pixel users who paid the same amount or less for theirs will be having 3-4 years of them.

              You should stop trusting that company, Nick. Go check Reddit or Japanese news websites to see the screams of actual Xperia users and fans.

                As the other anonymous person already pointed out, I was incorrectly referring to IMX608 (which is a true 16-in-1 sensor, as per the link above) when this conversation should be about IMX650, so that's on my part.

                Again, referring to the source link - IMX650 is an RYYB 40MP Quad Bayer (technically not "Bayer" since it lacks green pixels, though) sensor inside the P30 and Mate 30 series, a further customised version of Huawei-exclusive IMX600.

                Also, the sensor would not fit inside the periscope module due to size constraints. If you have seen how comically thick the one on Mi 10 Ultra is (with a 1/2 inch imager), you can immediately tell it's simply not possible for one to put a 1/1.7 inch sensor into the module while keeping the chassis as thin as 8.2mm. As the other person already mentioned, IMX650 is too tall to be placed perpendicularly to the lens opening. It's not about having a "better engineer", you literally can't fit it without bending the rule of physics.

                The most dubious part is that this isn't the first time the sensor name for Sony's telephoto camera has been misreported. Xperia 1 II was advertised by Sony to have a 12MP 1/3.4 inch sensor on the tele camera but the software reported it used a Tetracell 20MP sensor, which you could tell was clearly wrong by looking into the raw files (there were no remosaicing artifacts).

                      -A 16 in 1 binning sensor does exist, it's the one used for the ultra wide camera on Mate 30 Pro and P40 Pro. The pixel arrangement has been confirmed by the microscope shot on the sensor surface taken by Techinsights. It outputs a 2.5MP image by default and 10MP in a partial binning mode, where the former was used for slow motion and the latter was for pictures. Not software, it's all hardware!

                      -You are wrong about IMX650 being used on Xperia I IV. IMX650 is a RYYB variant of IMX600, which is a quad bayer sensor used on P20 Pro and Mate 40 Pro. The sensor on Xperia's telephoto uses a conventional bayer CFA, plus the sensor is too large for the thickness of a bump. (5.5mm tall without even taking the sensor's outer rim into account!) It's not about cost, putting a sensor of this size in a tiny module like that is PHYSICALLY impossible.

                      -Nick got the sensor name wrong. What Nick was talking about (16 in 1 binning sensor) was IMX608 and this thing is irrelevant to this particular topic, which is all about IMX650.

                        Furthermore, most BT earphones will be e-waste a lot faster, when the batteries die in a few years. Also, there are lots of use cases where WIRED are more comfortable or intuitive to use, because they can be built smaller without the room for batteries and chip. More BT headphones are going lost because they lack a wire.

                        Advocating for stupid anti consumer trends is really the last thing we need in this boring all-the-same smartphone market right now.

                          No surprise since sony has own the periscope tech since 2005 after acquiring camera division of Minolta , the company who created the periscope tech.

                          Anyway, using any sensor that already exists is easier, cheaper and super convenient to sony electronics instead of ordering new exclusive sensor. Or ordering a copy of any other like 557 comes from 555.

                          Probably gonna be doing same after iphone 14 pro is out.

                              I wasn't a complainer at all these years, but removing headphone jack from everything, forcing to buy those garbage wireless headphones, rendering our amazing wired headphones useless. removing the micro sd to store your precious memories harder on drives (I LOST MORE THAN HALF OF PHOTOS AND VIDEOS THANKS TO NO MICRO SD, FILES BEING ON CLOUD)
                              So no, thank you. If it's still useful, why not still use it?

                                  I got my 1 IV on Tuesday. I wasn't expecting as release day was Thursday. Got a message Tuesday morning saying you Sony package has been delivered.
                                  Anyway, the one thing I noticed is that the phone runs quite hot. I had a 1 II before this and it only really got hot my charging at high power.

                                    That was software trick. Like LG G7 and OP6T. Increase ISO and downscale to lower resolution to hide extra noise.

                                    It does not do 4-1 and 16-1 like Isocell HP1.

If people can't find a phone that fits all their necessities they will have to live without, and headphone jacks aren't top priority, but that doesn't mean that people don't want it.
                                        As for wireless being better, that is plain wrong. They are more convenient for some situations, but they are far from better. Battery, connection reliability, price, risk of dropping/losing them, are all downsides of wireless. While for wired the only downsides are that the cable is annoying, and not all devices have jacks. The second one is an artificial problem made by device designers.
