Weekly poll: how much storage do you use on your phone? Are microSD slots still important?

19 June 2022
Camera resolutions keep rising, phones can now record 8K video, mobile apps are becoming more complex - all of that takes up more and more space on your phone.

It's rather the big labels where some greedy managers sack up all the profits and restrict distribution to some areas, where I won't care about how to get a certain song at all. Specially since there are already fees on every single storage device we buy to recompensate this greedy mafia that puts every consumer under general suspicion, which isn't all that fair either... I'd really like a phone with a card slot. I buy phones without them because card slots are generally only on the lower spec phones. But I really hate being forced to do this.

I keep a ton of podcasts and other media on a Micro SD. I use them on my long commute and listen via Android Auto. I cannot have both external storage and the Android Auto connection at the same time.

Even if you aren't using AA, listening to media will eventually run your battery down, and then you have to completely stop while you recharge.

The truth is, just like the 3.5mm headphone socket, a micro SD slot costs next to nothing to implement and has negligible impact on battery capacity. Losing it is yet another in a long line of misbegotten attempts to copy Apple.

Sony, Xiaomi, LG, Samsung, HTC, Oppo, vivo all kept their micro-sd card slots in their midranges.

Micro-SD cards are necessary, because aside from helping you save more data, it works as a backup when broken updates are released, a device gets damaged due to a broken display or any other emergency that might happen to it.

Not to mention, with it, you are not forced to pay premium in order to get more storage on your device. They aren't a proprietary format either, so price has gone down a lot in recent years.

Anonymous, 20 Jun 2022My media have grown past what puny sd slots can provide. ... moreI invested in a QNAP NAS.

It may seems expensive initially, but price for 1TB of phone storage can easily get a basic NAS with 12TB-16TB storage, will save lot of time and money in the long run :)

My media have grown past what puny sd slots can provide.

Invest in a NAS, then you have the freedom on whatever device you want. A good Synology or QNAP NAS, will do.
                        1. Auto backup Photos when you reach home.
                        2. Auto download media, instead of using your phone.
                        3. No duplicates, download only the media you want.
                        4. Personal VPN service, file sharing with anyone.

If you do not have the cash, you can always convert old PCs into NAS and setup DSM OS (Synology OS). But of course, unless you are homeless, or your country internet is trash.

Even when I have to use an adpater, I still use microSD cards to store media files (specifically) and access them on my phone or tablet. Since my PC is where I store all my files, I can easily save the ones I need on the microSD cards and connect them to my portable devices, and when I am done, I can just delete them and save other files; this saves me the time of downloading those files on my phone or tablet one by one. Those are usually cheap and 256gb is more than enough for me. There´s a major drawback since most adapters won´t allow to access the microSD card AND charge at the same time, but I can deal with it. I know there are phones with 256gb or more of storage but those are generally expensive, and I don´t need to replace my phone every year or 2...
