Google uses Drake's new Texts Go Green song to pressure Apple into adopting RCS

20 June 2022
Google has been on a campaign to get Apple to support the new more advanced messaging standard and to put an end to the green bubble bullying.

Everyone uses iMessage or they don't. Also, the US is in the top 5 or 10 countries for iPhone market share.

RCS might be a good idea but there are good reasons to not trust its proponents.

Bullshit, there are tons of other messengers, so nobody has to reside to something that becomes SMS.

Anonymous, 21 Jun 2022It's because Apple never did or against USB-C. It'... morewell let me tell you, when you want to build a house there is a lot of thing you have to tell by a lot of standards and even then you get site inspection come and tell you to change or adjust according to what they want. Wrong comparison mate

I use RCS (Chats) on my Galaxy to text my family (whenever available) and I can see the benefits of it as a standard, especially over the ancient SMS protocol. No need to demote something just because you don't use it, technology should be ever-evolving.

1st word issues, green text background. People need to get a life.

Anonymous, 21 Jun 2022aaaaahhhh so RCS in inferior. Why bother another company to... moreThe reason Apple won't support RCS is undoubtedly the same reason they cancelled plans to make iMessage cross-platform. They no longer even deny that it was because iMessage helped lock in iOS users, and hence making it cross-platform would make it easier for people to switch (hard to deny when the documents have been leaked). Adopting RCS would do the same, it would remove a barrier to iOS users switching if there was a universal advanced messaging option that was built-in on all platforms (the "built-in" bit is the difference between this and the various third party services that require everyone to join them separately).

The reason Google want to push this is the same: RCS itself is nothing to do with Google, but it has the potential to undermine the RCS lock-in and hence Google want Apple to adopt it.

Grey Wolf, 21 Jun 2022What is RCS? I have been using Android phones for ages now ... moreAndroid message apps that support RCS (e.g. Google's Messages and Samsung's client) call it "Chat". It's only available on Android, not on all service providers, not supported by most SMS apps, and needs to actually be activated to use it.

Basically it suffers from the same flaw as iMessage: it's only useful if live in a single-platform bubble. Which is why most of the people I know use third party messaging services (WhatsApp, Signal, whatever) that are available across platforms rather than either iMessage or RCS. Of course those have the drawback that everyone needs to use them, but you can ask someone to install one if they want to join, which isn't an option with iMessage or RCS if they use the "wrong" platform.
