Meta shows off VR headset prototypes that push resolution, brightness, size and focus to the limit

20 June 2022
The goal is to achieve lifelike imagery with super bright displays that are sharp enough for people with 20/20 vision and optics that let you focus at different distances.

Anonymous, 21 Jun 2022VR headset?? Nope. Why? Coz that thing is blocking your vie... moreBreak in and stab you? Where do you live you have to calculate with this risk as high probability while being in VR?

Anonymous, 21 Jun 2022Wearing headphones and watching movies on TV? You still can... moreI don't actually own a TV, just watch movies on my monitor. Doesn't really change the fact that you're still pre-occupied with what every you're doing like sleeping, cooking or even taking a shit.

It's shitty argument to being with that you can't have peripheral vision, the criminal doesn't care if you do or not.

Project "Butterscotch" looks interesting, the rest - not so much. Being able to focus on different objects sounds interesting in theory, but I think it will just lead to nausea. Having a flashlight directed into your retina doesn't sound interesting AT ALL. If you want a laser pointed into your eye, you don't need a $1000 headset. You can go blind using a laser pointer.

Increasing DPI for VR sounds far more interesting. The first few VR headsets I've tried were horrible in this regard, the first one (a phone strapped to my face) was hard to look at since all I could see was a bunch of SUB pixels (colorful mosaic), it took some time to focus on the image. Looked cool but overly pixelated. PS VR was better, HTC Vive was much better. Neither was good enough for me to buy one for myself. Butterscotch looks to change that. IF we can have some decent content for VR (currently I hear there's some decent content, it's just not much in terms of volume).

Anonymous, 21 Jun 2022VR headset?? Nope. Why? Coz that thing is blocking your vie... moreHow many times have you avoided being stabbed by not wearing VR while watching movies, and someone broke into your house and tried to stab you, only failing because they entered from your field of view and not behind you?

If you seriously consider this scenario to be realistic, you need to see a doctor.

How is it different from you sleeping and someone breaking in and stabbing you?
How is it different from you wearing headphones watching a movie?
VR injuries are basically the same as people playing a new sport and getting injured, people need time to adjust and learn the new tech.

While I don't personally use VR, I see this as a good tech demonstration and leap forward in that VR space.

The "metaverse" is nothing more than a business model that Facebook invented to get even more data from unsuspecting users and to piss them off with advertising.
Everyone talks about "new technologies" that in reality have not existed for over 50 years. Existing technologies are being repurposed and integrated into new business models. As the name suggests, technology includes real existing technology, and not much has changed there. Everything that is used was invented decades ago. Of course, a lot has been miniaturised and the processing speed increased, but this is not "new" technology.
At the end of the day, it doesn't amount to stealing customer data and making money from advertising. Mega-bullshit would be the appropriate term for Metaverse.
It is not only the money that is made through performanceless business, but, and this is much worse, the complete loss of privacy combined with social incompetence - which inevitably leads to the complete desolidarisation of society... and this is not even a horror scenario of the distant future, but has long been proven by reality...

VR headset?? Nope. Why? Coz that thing is blocking your views (visual) from outside the world when you're wearing it. Just imagine, while you're on your VR headset and someone broke into your house. You won't know and the intruders might just stab you from back or any angles. What I was is a VR room (simulation) like the one on X-Men movies and AR wearables is good too. So, VR headset is a BIG NO NO NO. Just go and search on YouTube how much easier people get injured while using the VR headset 🤦🏻‍♂️

Waiting for technology like in Matrix movie.
Wish to have glasses which will teachu me litterary everything in fraction of time.

"Zuckerberg explains, real life scenes are often brighter than what high end TVs and displays can output. "

If we are going prototype Vs prototype this statement isn't true...

Companies like bright side have displays hitting 14000 nits so displays like that are out their.. not consumer market for sure

This is bad news for OLED that is a very dim screen technology

LCD at least has blue LCD for quantum dot colour conversion to even rival Mricoled...

I guess this VR headset kinda confirms the direction we are heading with super hit specular highlights 10k nits and above for photorealism/psychosomactic effect

With that thing being close to your eyes, was that much brightness really necessary?
Or is it for outdoor use with cut outs on the sides for passive cooling?
