Any websites can track your IP addresses. It has nothing to do with CAPTCHA. When you visit a website, the website has to know your IP address, otherwise they won't know the destination to send data to. GSMArena or any website can track your IP address even if you don't post or report comments. It's impossible that Apple doesn't know this. They can't be that uninformed. It's dishonest of them to mention IP address tracking.

Nope, if an attacker let bots access the website through iOS/macOS virtual machines, they would still not get through because the verification process uses the certificate stored inside iPhone, and then performs rate-limiting as well to see whether the request generated from your device is fraudulent or not.

"This website tracks your IP addresses. You can see your location code on your posts"
But GSMArena doesn't track your IP addresses if you don't try to submit and send the data to their server (i.e. Write or report comments).

It just verifies that the entity that uses it uses a new version of an Apple OS and has an Apple ID. Apple probably purposely misses the point. I mean, I don't think that they are very stupid. The purpose of CAPTCHA is to prevent automation. However, you can use automation with this method.

Also, it's dishonest to mention IP address tracking. With or without CAPTCHA, websites can track your IP addresses. This website tracks your IP addresses. You can see your location code on your posts.

Nick Tegrataker, 22 Jun 2022🤦Exactly. Captcha was invented to prevent automation, so bots couldn't just do stuff.

TL;DR - As GSMArena writes in the title, it REPLACES CAPTCHAs. So if you're using an iPhone/Mac there will no CAPTCHA involved in the entire verification process.

This tech has huge potential. I hope others also get onboard and make it universal so we do not have to go through captcha again

Olympus Oms, 21 Jun 2022Automatically captcha is the same as a robot doing it. No m... moreThat's not how it works. FaceID creates a token from a face and would be automatically considered as "this is human doing it" by supported systems because there is a face in front of a FaceID system. And because it's a closed system there won't be any means really to misuse it in terms of abusing it to spam things with different face tokens. I don't know how verification will work, but I can assume it'll only work on iOS or iPadOS because they are closed isolated and secured systems and won't work anywhere else.

So sad, android users tend to brag how techie they are, and how iOS is a dumb down OS for casuals.

But when they open their mouth to comment about new Apple features, it shows how little they know about tech.
