Disassembly video reveals the bonkers size of Xiaomi 12S Ultra's IMX989 camera module

05 July 2022
The module makes full use of the 1" sensor, unlike certain previous efforts. But it is a rather large and thick module.

Because it's too expensive to use in all respects.

robert, 07 Jul 2022Google needs to adopt a 1" sensor as its main shooter,... moreYeah, they're only going to go but so far with their dependence on computational technology for their cameras. Every major phone maker has caught up to, and surpassed them in many ways.

Anonymous, 06 Jul 2022No it is not. The photosite of 4:3 1/1.5" sensor is 6m... moreHmm. With a larger sensor, you'd need a bigger lens to cover the entire sensor. Unless you don't mind the trade-off of very soft edges on the side of the photos.
I'm presuming you are refering to Sony pro-I? Did remember reading somewhere that it has a 1" sensor, but data seems to suggest that they did not use the entire sensor. Closer to 1/1.3 coverage.

Google needs to adopt a 1" sensor as its main shooter, no reason not to.

A 1" sensor crop factor is about 2,7x. That means the used lens in this phone is about 8,5mm (8,5mm*2,7=23mm). So 8,5mm is a distance between the sensor and the center of lens (point of convergence). You also need some space for focusing lens elements. 11mm thick for camera module with lens is a very nice result.

CompactPhones5ever, 05 Jul 2022Just another gimmick imo. It used to be "more megapixe... moreThis is not a gimmick.

There are three parameters in a camera that are crucial for capturing great photo/video
            1. Sensor (sensor size along with sensor quality)
            2. Lens (lenses made of glass without or minimum defects)
            3. Software (this includes color science, corrections and post processing)

Just compare a sample image of a medium format/full frame/crop sensor/mft sensor/and popular smartphones but not on tiny displays of a smartphone, but on a larger professional display. Anyone can easily see the difference of a larger sensor given their generation and lens used are equivalent.

Also smartphone lenses are made of plastics that are no match for the premium lenses used by professional cameras. Just check the price of any recent native f/1.2 lenses like canon RF 85mm f/1.2 or canon 200mm f/2.0 (make sure to check the image samples of these lenses, you will be amazed)

And at last the software trickery used by smartphones are to cover up for the above two shortcomings.

NOTE: That artificial portrait mode in smartphones that everyone braggs about is a natural process on a professional cameras (just you need to know how to take it/correct settings unlike smartphones where you have to just select portait mode).

I use an Xperia Pro-I myself and confirm that compared to other phones I've tried, the Sony has fast autofocus and capture times. I guess the Instagram generation prefers over-processed pics ready to post, but I prefer neutral raw images that I can edit myself. Different purpose.

Anonymous, 06 Jul 2022hahaha sure thing manYou could be fine with some heft, I am fine with some heft (fold 3 is nice and grippy being 17mm thick, but also because of the narrowness that lets you grip around the phone much better, so I am not target audience for slabs).
                .
What I hate is how the thickness of the camera bump is kept hidden in the specs and this tear down. If the camera module is 11+ mm, the bump sickness (sic! haha) is going well over 15, including front glass, screen, rear glass?
                .
With such a huge bump, this should not be hidden.
                .
The bump looks to be scratch prone too, unless an even thicker case is used, which makes this design way too niche for a flagship.

People care too much about straight out-of-the-camera results with heavy JPEG processings that look very artificial nowadays, but does anybody else like Sony cares for shooting speed?
What good is that "multi-frame image stacking" algorithms if it's not fast enough to capture fast-moving subjects with very minimal to no motion blur?
I can simply shoot bursts of RAW photos then hand-pick the best frames out of a plethora of them to edit in post-processing latur on, to the way that I want my images to look like, but if my camera wasn't quick enough to snap photos quickly, then what's the point of all that fancy software enhancements? It's all meaningless at the end of the day if the camera is not quick enough to clear buffer and shoot photos rapidly continuously.

Anonymous, 06 Jul 2022Periscope of Mark 4 is the 40Mp 1/1.5" used previously... moreNo it is not. The photosite of 4:3 1/1.5" sensor is 6mm tall, and the surrounding circuits make it a few extra millimeters larger. Sony doesn't have a massive bump to accommodate such a big sensor. Cropping a larger sensor will not reduce the height of a periscope, but using a smaller sensor does.

Huawei uses a quad bayer sensor too so if you were right then the tele cam on Xperia 1 4 would be effectively 3MP in resolution, which would contradict with the resolution of sample photos.

Unless you are saying that Sony is being dishonest with the product specs again🤔
