We're talking about electronics, a USB C port carries electricity, so why isn't it possible for a creator to modify it, just this little?
Even data can be carried across USB C, so even at their worst effort, the Apple customer may lose a feature or two, but it must work anyhow.
It was possible since day 1.
Apple are just money earners, exploiting their sweet and innocent fan base. 'sweet and Innocent' here is an appreciation, not demeaning in any way. They're victims of a lot of things, not just this.

On seeing the title, I was thinking of commenting, "Come on, obviously its easier to replace charging port of something that only needs to do charging & no data transfer"
On reading the text, I'm like, "Well, its Apple, Why will they allow anything to be easy?"

Why was this worthy of an article? People change charge ports all the time. If you know how to solder it's pretty easy. I changed my laptop from proprietary to usb-c and playstation 4 controller micro-usb to usb-c.

When supplying a cable that can connect to USB-C they not only can, but already have made it...
Technically there is still a lightning port in there. This guy 'just' compacted things super elegantly by putting a very reduced version of their cable into the device, With a male to female plug swap.

It's not even about Apple being incapable of making USB-C iPhones and AirPods, but all about making money from propietary Lightning Port instead. The fact that one non-Apple electronics engineer could make a perfectly usable USB-C port on an Apple device means this is nowhere near difficult for Apple themselves to do so.

Apple must stop their joke lightning and switch to type c. I got rid of micro usb as well.
