It's obvious that Taiwanese men are bringing those sensors to the market ...looks like they need to compensate something. If Samsung came from Africa, it would be completely other story.

Why do we have to waste so much storage on photos that don’t look much different from 12MP ones?

Good analogy : you a 5L bottle full of air. You can get all this air and squeeze it to fit inside 3L bottle (ignore pressure). No air was lost.

Anyway iphone pro shall have it, maybe 1 v (cant order copy before Apple uses it)

Anonymous, 26 Jul 2022Nokia 808 does not do binning (despite gsmarena keeps sayin... moreYes, does not do binning but "sort of" the downsizing is like joining pixels the technique is similar as these new sensors do, but the difference is one is made at hardware-level
while the other one is at software-level.

But certainly i would prefer a new 41MP sensor non quad bayer just normal as the ones being used in the iphone, or i will be even happy with the one used on the latest nokia lumia, 24 megapixel is just the sweet spot for my tastes.

blue, 26 Jul 2022And in what it would be different from modern sensors? It h... moreNokia 808 does not do binning (despite gsmarena keeps saying for unknown reason).
It resizes from 38MP to 5MP to hide noise and artifacts.
Same thing with Sony Z series (20.7 to 8).

Make a test on your computer. Resize some photos to 5MP to see how better they look compared to full resolution.

Sensor of 808 (toshiba made) has old tech FSI (front side illuminated). Newer sensor with exactly same specs would have better performance at higher ISO, better signal to noise ration, less rolling shutter, higher DR, lower power consumption, better capabilities like 4K/120 and 8K/30 video or higher framerates for stills and 10 or 12bit ADC.

blue, 26 Jul 2022Today's sensors are generations ahead from Nokia 808. ... moreThats why i'm saying about "renew" i'm not talking about getting that one in to a new smartphone which btw will make a huge difference with today power and lens, but do
a new sensor based on the 41MP base of the Nokia 808 non binned sensor, just RAW
                  RGB 41MP camera.

That would WIPE the competition, binned sensors do not output true resolution like
nokia 808 did, in fact i have old pictures and i tried to compare it with the S21 Ultra
and when shooting at 108MP yes, more or less look in terms of detail similar, but
the natural rendition, the S21U looks processed.

Not nostalgia, of course Nokia 808 for todays standad has nothing to do, but if it used
the same powerfull HDR, long exposure that new phones do, would certainly make up
                  for an outdated CMOS.

                    It is what it is.

I'm struggling to understand why Samsung is wasting their money on this trash? How small would the pixels even be at this point? Complete waste imo

And thats because physics always wins in photography. Bigger sensor and pixel size = more information and light gathered. If theres not even enough info to begin with, you cant do much.
